Assessment accommodation

When you apply to this selection process, you are not applying for a specific job, but to an inventory for future vacancies. As positions become available, applicants who meet the qualifications may be contacted for further assessment.

Successful candidates of this process will participate in the Apprenticeship and Operational Development Program (AODP), it is a combination of on-the-job-training (OJT) and trade specific training. The duration of departmental AODPs range from three to five years, depending on the trade or area of specialization. Upon graduation, the employee will receive an Interprovincial Red Seal certification.

During your apprenticeship, you will be working side by side qualified civilian employees and military members to ensure the safety and maintenance of all fleet vehicles. While completing your on-the-job-training (OJT) hours, you will be compensated at a competitive rate, received full benefits and gain a unique skill set.

In addition to an impressive compensation package, the Department of National Defence will also pay for program related costs, including tuition and tools, along with full pay while you are attending your courses.

Duties

As a Vehicle or Heavy Duty Equipment mechanic apprentice at one of the Canadian Army Bases in Alberta, you will conduct first, second and third line maintenance, safety inspections, and various service requirements on a wide variety of vehicles, including light and heavy commercial vehicles, along with military vehicles and other speciality equipment.

Intent of the process

The intention of this inventory is to fill current and future apprenticeship vacancies at the GL-VHE-00 level, which includes vehicle mechanics and heavy duty vehicle mechanics. Appointments may be permanent or temporary depending on the need of the Unit.

This inventory may be used to staff similar positions in the province of Alberta within the Department of National Defence and other government departments.

The inventory will be updated every 180 days. You will receive a notice in your applicant account 14 days before the end of your active period to determine whether or not you wish to keep being considered for an additional 180 days.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

One of the following three qualifications:

1) Satisfy the entrance requirements as outlined by the Alberta Apprenticeship Board outlined under Category B.
2) Successful completion of the entrance exam.
3) Participated in the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP).

Must NOT currently hold a Red Seal certification in Vehicle or heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic in the province of Alberta or other province/territory.

** Note: the military equivalent of a Red Seal certification as determined by the Province of Alberta is successful completion of QL5, QL5A or higher in the Vehicle Technician trade. Previous and current CAF members who have completed their QL5/QL5A are not able to apply to this process.

Successful completion of first, second or third year of program completion towards Journey Certification as an Auto/Heavy Duty/ Commercial Transport Mechanic.

Class 3 Driver’s License with Airbrake endorsement.

Experience in the repair and maintenance of commercial diesel vehicles or heavy-duty equipment or vehicles.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Willing and able to lift up to 25 kg in accordance to safety standards and procedures.
Possession of a valid (unrestricted and non-graduated) Canadian provincial or territorial driver’s license such as Class 5 License in Alberta.
Provision of an acceptable driver’s abstract, provided within 30 days of request, and dated no earlier than 30 days prior to the request. Acceptable as determined by management.
Must wear CSA approved safety footwear at all times and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Must be prepared and physically capable of working in a garage and workshop environment.
Willing and able to obtain/maintain a DND 404.
Willing and able to work overtime as required, at times on short notice.
Willing and able to work from heights.
Willing and able to work outside in inclement weather.
Willing and able to attend all employer directed training.
Willing and able to travel within area of responsibility for tasks, which may or may not require overnight stays.
