The Pacific Forestry Centre (PFC) is an internationally-recognized forest science laboratory specializing in phytosanitary trade issues, forest disturbances, economics, carbon science, and remote sensing. A vibrant group of researchers, technical staff and administrative staff work to maintain a creative and stimulating work environment. The research centre is located in Victoria, a dynamic coastal city on southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Working as part of a NRCan team, and with other Federal Government departments, and stakeholders, the candidate will be responsible for coordinating research activities of a group of scientists at the PFC. They will also liaise with CFS and CFIA scientists and trade policy experts across Canada and the world, to help resolve issues related to phytosanitary concerns on the import and export of forest commodities. The candidate will also be responsible for reviewing, analyzing and supervising scientific research in support of policy decisions and assisting other government departments, and industry, in facilitating market access for Canadian forest commodities.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff similar positions at the SE-REM-01 group and level with various linguistic requirements and/or profiles and/or tenures within Natural Resources Canada.

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification. (See Note 1).
Note:1. The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master's or bachelor's degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).
Productivity/Recognition: Recognized achievement as evidenced by authorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers or other communications of high standing. This must include authorship of research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Experience in conducting, or coordinating phytosanitary research, related to trade of forest commodities.
Experience in providing advice to trade negotiations.
Experience in developing national, regional or international policy documents and translating science into policy and policy into science
Experience in managing projects, related to phytosanitary issues with national or international organizations such as North American Plant Protection Organization panels.
Recent (within last three years) experience with managing staff
