Duties

As a Program Scientist, Sun-Earth System Sciences, you will responsible, among other things, for assisting in the planning, execution, study of acquired data and conclusions of the science component of Sun-Earth System Science missions, studies and related activities, by coordinating and leading the work of external scientific teams and provision of Sun-Earth System Science expertise to CSA management and stakeholders.

As a Program Scientist, Missions and Instruments Development for Earth Observation you will be responsible, among other things, for conducting research to develop theories and technologies applicable to the domain of expertise, implementing results of latest advances to develop new applications, designing and implementing facilities, simulators to support pertinent research to the development of new instruments and algorithms for future science missions in the branch portfolio.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff 4 permanent positions: two Program Scientist, Sun-Earth System Sciences positions and two Program Scientist, Missions and Instruments Development for Earth Observation positions.

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates will be established and could be used to staff similar positions whose length, linguistic profiles and security profiles may vary.

EDUCATION

• Graduation with a Doctoral or Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, Earth System sciences, solar-terrestrial sciences, climate science, remote sensing, atmospheric science or some other science relevant to the position.

Note:
The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

• Recent and significant experience in conducting scientific research.

• Recent and significant experience in design of instruments or algorithms or simulations to develop instruments, models or applications in a field of relevance to the position.

• Experience in designing, proposing, evaluating, or executing complex research projects.

DEFINITIONS:
Significant experience is defined as the performance of duties related to the specific criterion for a period of at least three (3) years. A Ph.D degree is equivalent to 4 years of experience (including the Master). A Master Degree is equivalent to 1 year of experience

Experience is defined as the performance of duties related to the specific criterion for a period of at least one (1) year.

Recent experience is defined as having been acquired within the last five (5) years.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

• Doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, Earth sciences, solar-terrestrial sciences, climate science, remote sensing, atmospheric science or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

• Experience in obtaining, processing or analyzing data from science instrumentation

• Experience in the definition, design, simulation or demonstration of an instrument used for remote sensing from space or in situ measurements relating to space environment.

• Experience in the various aspects of the design of a space mission: orbital mechanics, coverage analysis, data processing and handling, power, space environment requirements.

• In-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, methods, techniques and practices related to the discipline associated with solar-terrestrial science
Or
• In-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, methods, techniques and practices related to the discipline associated with atmospheric science
Or
• In-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, methods, techniques and practices related to the discipline associated with Earth system science

• Knowledge of recent developments and trends, in Canada and internationally related to a discipline associated with Sun-Earth system sciences

For the position: Program Scientist, Missions and Instruments Developments for Earth Observation

• In-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, methods, techniques and practices of at least one key discipline in instrumentation for remote sensing (i.e. radars, interferometers, optical imagers, spectrometers, radiometers, lidar, etc.)
Or
• In-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, methods, techniques and practices of in situ probes for ionosphere and plasma physics (i.e. mass spectrometers, ion analyzers, Langmuir probes, etc.)
