The position of Coal PreparationTechnologist at the Metallurgical Fuels Laboratory of CanmetENERGY-Ottawa involves daily handling of bulk metallurgical coal samples and their preparation for charging in pilot size (350 kg and 1000kg capacity) and small scale (12 kg capacity) sole-heated ovens. The position requires the handling of coal samples including the emptying contents of 45-gallon drums on lab floor for air-drying, followed by the collection of these samples for blending/homogenization/splitting, crushing, moisture adjustment, bulk density measurement, selection and collection of representative sample for analytical quality tests, transfer to coal hopper, charging in pilot ovens and pushing produced coke following carbonization heat treatment.
The position also requires maintaining good and concise records/log books, preparing, and blending materials, experience in maintaining and repairing basic apparatus, tools and equipment for use in scientific projects and experience in observing health and safety guidelines and procedures prescribed in IIG-Met Fuels Group pilot-scale laboratory, practices, and techniques in this setting and the use of Personal Protective Equipment.
CanmetENERGY is one of Canada's premier organizations in the field of energy science and technology. As a key research arm of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), CanmetENERGY works with private and other public sector partners to develop and deploy leading-edge energy products and processes for virtually all sectors of the Canadian economy. The Metallurgical fuels Laboratory of CanmetENERGY is an internationally recognized test facilities for the assessment of coal and coke quality for metallurgical applications. The specialized facilities available at the Metallurgical Fuels Laboratory include pilot-scale coal handling equipment, complete petrographic, microscopic and image analysis systems for coal and coke, and pilot-scale pressure measuring moveable wall coke carbonization ovens and sole heated coke ovens. These facilities, utilized for developing improvements in the quality of cokes by the formulation of coal blends for cokemaking for coal/coke suppliers and steel producers, are complemented by experienced research staff.
Candidates may be referred from this inventory for various positions based on the needs of the organization, asset qualifications, or random selection. The inventory will be updated every 180 days. If your application is part of the inventory, you will receive a system generated email notice in your applicant account 20 days before that period. The notice will ask you whether your application should continue to remain active for an additional 180 days. Failure to respond to the email will result in the inactivation of your application. You will need to reactivate your application to be considered for staffing opportunities.

Able to work flexible hours, occasional overtime, and rotational shifts, including nights, evenings, weekends and designated holidays.

Able to lift 23 kg (50 lbs.) and to position and move heavy barrels (up to 200 kg) onto and off forklift trucks.
Medical certification to work in hot, smoky, dusty environments with fumes.
