Duties

The Protected Areas Specialist will lead specific projects within the CWS Northern Region protected areas program. Specifically, this position will represent CWS on up to two community-based committees that manage nearby protected areas; will coordinate and/or undertake bird and habitat monitoring projects in protected areas; will lead community consultations; will represent CWS on regional or national committees; will supervise one or more employees, and undertake other duties as required.

The Coastal Ecosystem Specialist will lead specific projects within the CWS Northern Region protected areas program. Specifically, this position will represent CWS on up to two community-based committees that manage nearby protected areas; will coordinate and/or undertake seabird and seabird habitat monitoring projects in protected areas; will lead community consultations; will represent CWS on regional or national committees; will supervise one or more employees, and undertake other duties as required.

The Environmental Assessment Coordinator will coordinate reviews and comments for CWS about development projects that are proceeding through environmental impact assessment in Nunavut; will review and process applications related to Species at Risk; may represent CWS on one community-based committee that manages nearby protected areas.

Intent of the process

This pool of qualified candidates may be used by Environment and Climate Change Canada and by other federal departments and agencies for similar positions with similar requirements in Iqaluit, Whitehorse, and Yellowknife.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education (Stream 1 and 2):

• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

(Streams 1 and 2)

• Experience analyzing and interpreting information on environmental issues, ecosystems, habitats or species.
• Experience working effectively with Indigenous communities and organizations, government, regulators, environmental non-government organizations, or industry on environmental protection or wildlife issues.

(Stream 1)

• Experience leading or participating in multi-stakeholder partnerships focused on issues or activities related to environmental conservation.
• Experience leading, planning, or managing wildlife or conservation programs or surveys in remote locations OR significant experience* conducting wildlife or habitat programs or surveys in remote locations.

* Significant experience means experience obtained by the candidate that is representative of the depth and breadth of experience that would normally have been gained performing the duties for a period of approximately three (3) years.

• Graduation with an advanced degree (Masters, Doctorate) from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Asset Experience:

• Experience leading programs or projects on habitat conservation, including protected area programs or projects, or species at risk conservation or migratory bird conservation.
• Experience handling firearms.
• Experience participating in regulatory processes as a regulator or subject matter expert.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations on collaborative projects in a northern environment.
• Experience in coaching or mentoring colleagues or other individuals.

(Stream 1)

• Experience leading field projects related to seabirds or coastal birds.

• Knowledge of environmental assessment processes and principles.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Conditions of employment may vary depending on the position to be staffed. They may include some or all of the following:

• Willing and able to work overtime, irregular hours and weekends on occasion.
• Willing and able to travel within Canada, including travel to remote locations in Nunavut.
• Willing and able to travel in boats, off-road vehicles or small aircraft.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Willing and able to obtain a Health Canada medical clearance.
• Willing and able to perform fieldwork in remote locations with possibly no amenities or services for up to 6 consecutive weeks at a time, including:
- Willing and able to obtain and maintain First Aid Training certification.
- Willing and able to work in adverse environmental conditions.
- Willing and able to obtain and maintain a valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for non-restricted firearms, and
- Willing and able to carry and use firearms in the field.
