As a senior economist at Fisheries Oceans Canada your duties will include but will not be limited to:
- Managing and conducting quantitative and qualitative economic analysis and research of the fisheries and oceans sector, including cost-benefit analysis, economic impact analysis, and/or econometric analysis and the analysis of international trade of fish and agriculture products.
- Managing major files or projects and providing expert advice and recommendations to managers and senior managers.
- Working collaboratively across the organization, and possibly with representatives from other departments and international organizations to develop advice, analysis or frameworks.
- Responding in a timely manner and managing ad hoc requests from senior management or other sectors, as required.

A covering letter in 1,500 words (maximum) "Please describe a quantitative economic analysis or research project for which you were the primary analyst or lead investigator. Use an example that will allow you to communicate how you meet the main experience and knowledge criteria for this position, including technical skills as well as the ability to write concise and readable summaries of technical material. Although a specific format is not required, you should provide your readers with an understanding of the motivation for the work, the technical approach undertaken, the rationale for the chosen approach, the main results/outcomes of the study, and the associated policy implications. Note: The cover letter is not the only tool that will be used to evaluate candidates, but will provide the basis for initial rankings. It is more important to write a concise, informative and eloquent summary than to cover every element of your experience and background."
EDUCATION :
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in economics or statistics.
Note: Candidates must always have a university degree. The courses for the specialization do not necessarily have to be part of a degree program in the required specialization. The specialization may also be obtained through an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
EXPERIENCE :
EXP1 – Recent and significant* experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative economic analysis and research, ideally in the natural resources field. Examples include cost-benefit analysis, economic impact analysis, or econometric analysis.
EXP2 - Experience in synthesizing complex technical economic information, in writing and editing technical notes and reports, preparing audience appropriate non-technical summaries and presentations.
EXP3 – Significant* experience providing strategic policy analysis and advice (written and verbal) to senior management** on policy or program issues.
EXP4 - Experience building consensus with internal and external partners to advance complex policy issues.
* Significant is defined as having the depth and breadth of experience normally acquired over a period of at least two (2) years, within the last 5 years.
** Senior management is defined as director level (or equivalent outside government) and higher.
EDUCATION :
A master’s or PhD degree from a recognized university with acceptable specialization in economics or statistics.
AEXP1 – Significant* experience conducting cost-benefit analysis and other economic regulatory analysis that meets the requirements of the Government of Canada’s Cabinet Directive on Regulations.
AEXP2 – Significant* experience using STATA, SPSS, SAS or similar software to extract, manipulate, and conduct econometric analysis on data from large/complex datasets, ideally in the context of developing economic simulation models.
* Significant is defined as having the depth and breadth of experience normally acquired over a period of at least two (2) years, within the last 5 years.
