CanmetMINING is interested in furthering study on the following topic.
Chromium represents an opportunity for Canada to enter an emerging and globally strategic market. The main application of chromium is in the stainless steel industry, which is vital to modern industry. A Ring of Fire deposit in northern Ontario is the only commercial quantity of chromite in North America and the fourth largest deposit in the world. Slag is a major by-product of ferrochrome production and there are potential opportunities to utilize ferrochrome slag for construction, civil engineering and other purposes. However, this will require a clear assessment of the potential for slag stability and leachability of chromium and other metal(loid)s under various environmental conditions, and if it occurs, designing options to stabilize the slag. Slag will remain a long-term liability unless these issues can be addressed. Working in association with CanmetMINING scientists, an M.Sc project will be undertaken on this topic.
