Duties

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Ecosystems Management Branch is seeking to recruit enthusiastic technicians to support the delivery of its policy, program and regulatory responsibilities under the Fisheries Act, the Species at Risk Act, the Oceans Act, and the Aquatic Invasive Species Regulations. Specific duties may include:

Stream 1 – Fish Habitat Monitoring Technician
• Monitoring the effectiveness of mitigation and offsetting measures implemented by proponents to protect fish and fish habitat, including Species at Risk
• Monitoring for compliance with the conditions stipulated in Authorizations or permits issued by DFO under the Fisheries Act and/or the Species at Risk Act
• Reviewing monitoring reports submitted by proponents
• Surveillance for early detection and capture of Aquatic Invasive Species in the Great Lakes

Stream 2 – Geographic Information Systems Technician
• Managing geospatial data and mapping aquatic resource information in support of Ecosystems Management’s responsibilities related to integrated planning and regulatory decision making

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff indeterminate Fish Habitat Monitoring Technician positions in Edmonton AB and Burlington ON, and one Geographic Information Systems Technician position in Burlington ON. The pool of qualified candidates may also be used to staff other Ecosystems Management EG-04 positions on a determinate (term), acting or indeterminate basis in any of DFO’s Central and Arctic Region office locations.

Recent experience* planning and undertaking field sampling programs or monitoring activities to assess fish and fish habitat.

Stream 2:
Recent experience* using ESRI ArcGIS software for the mapping and manipulation of geospatial data.

Recent experience* with implementation of geodatabases.

* Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last five (5) years

Stream 1 only:
Knowledge of freshwater species of fish found in DFO’s Central and Arctic Region, their life history and their habitat requirements.

Stream 2 only:
Knowledge of methods for acquiring, processing and reporting on geo-referenced information relating to aquatic ecosystems.

Experience collecting, handling and identifying freshwater fish species, and/or completion of a freshwater fish identification course

STREAM 1 only:
Experience using, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialized aquatic field sampling equipment.

STREAM 1 only:
Experience trailering, launching, operating, and maintaining motorized boats.

STREAM 2 only:
Experience with implementation of relational databases.

STREAM 2 only:
• Experience programming or scripting using software such as R, Python, SQL, Model Builder, or Geocortex Workflows

All positions:
• Knowledge of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s legislation relating to fish and fish habitat management, Species at Risk and/or Aquatic Invasive Species
• Knowledge of aquatic Species at Risk in Central and Arctic Region
• Knowledge of aquatic invasive species in Central and Arctic Region
• Knowledge of the impacts of works and undertakings on fish and fish habitat

Conditions of employment
