All Research Scientist (SE-RES) appointments are incumbent based. Therefore, the level of the position is determined by the qualifications/accomplishments of the successful candidate as determined by a committee.

The immediate need is to staff four (4) positions that requires a reliability status security screening for Streams 1 and 3; and a secret security screening for Stream 2. A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada at the SE-RES-01 to SE-RES-05 group and level with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative), language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual) and profiles (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability Status, Secret), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position with acceptable specialization in physics, geophysics or a related field, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification. (See Note 1).
Abilities / Skills
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).
Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
•Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
•Operational research and scientific analysis;
•Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
Note:
1. The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master's or bachelor's degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.
All Streams (Stream 1: Ionospheric Physicist; Stream 2: Radiation Physicist; Stream 3: Seismologist):
Experience in developing, and conducting research to advance knowledge in one of the streams.
Experience conducting independent research, with minimal guidance, from experimental design to analysis and interpretation of results.
Experience communicating results of research through publications, reports and presentations.
Stream1 (Ionospheric Physicist) :
Experience in processing and interpretation of geomagnetic and ionospheric data.
Experience in working with ionospheric instruments (i.e. global navigation satellite system (GNSS) instruments, high frequency (HF) transmitters/receivers, riometers, ionosondes, etc.).
Experience in writing related software programs and applications.
Stream 2 (Radiation Physicist) :
Experience in optimizing detector design for the acquisition of radiation data.
Experience in acquisition, processing and interpretation of data of Radiation Physicist.
Experience maintaining and programming on a linux workstation and writing software to perform analysis of radiation data.
Stream 3 (Seismologist) :
Experience in analysis of broadband seismological data.
Experience writing software to perform analysis of seismological data.
Stream 1 (Ionospheric Physicist) :
Experience in python, Interactive Data Language (IDL), Matlab or other acceptable software.
Experience working with HF radio.
Experience in the application of ray tracing techniques for modelling HF radiowave propagation.
Experience in working with ionospheric models.
Stream 2 (Radiation Physicist) :
Experience programming in a linux environment using advanced analysis tools such as C++ software, Geant4 or EGS, and the CERN root libraries.
Stream 3 (Seismologist) :
Experience working with real-time data, including for earthquake early warning applications.
Experience with seismological fieldwork.
Experience working with data from arrays of seismometers.
English or French

Stream 1 (Ionospheric Physicist) :
Knowledge of a physical sciences field; particularly geomagnetism and space weather with a focus on space weather impacts to the ionosphere.
Knowledge of relevant data gathering, analysis and testing methodologies, practices and techniques.
Stream 2 (Radiation Physicist) :
Knowledge of the theories of radioactivity and the processes of radiation transport and interaction.
Knowledge of design and operation of various types of detectors of radiation including existing and emerging technologies.
Knowledge of data acquisition hardware.
Knowledge of statistical methods of processing of radiation data.
Knowledge of software packages for modelling of transport of radioactivity.
Knowledge of types and quantities of natural radioactivity.
Knowledge of the human health consequences of exposure to radioactivity.
Stream 3 (Seismologist) :
Knowledge of earth sciences particularly geophysics and seismology and their applications.
Knowledge of earthquakes in tectonic environments relevant to Canada.
Knowledge of data gathering, analysis, testing methodologies, practices and techniques.
