The Fox Creek area in west-central Alberta is characterized by induced seismicity. While many studies that have been carried out in recent years suggest that the induced seismicity in this area is generated by hydraulic fracturing, there remain unsolved questions about 1) identifying geologic structures (faults, fracture zones) that could have been reactivated during hydraulic fracturing operations and 2) quantifying critical formation pressure increase and associated horizontal stresses changes that could induce fault shear slip. This Ph.D. research project will incorporate methodologies of structural interpretation of seismic reflection data, coupled reservoir geomechanical modeling, fault transmissivity and mechanical instability analysis carried out in Petrel-Visage-Eclipse and Techlog software package. The modeling results will be validated by available microseismic data and well production history.
