Volcanic mercury emissions from Iceland:
Project description:
The project aims to improve understanding of the mass flux and geochemistry of volcanic mercury emissions into the global environment. This project will establish a field station network on Iceland to collect volcanic gas samples for mercury measurements from several volcanic systems across the island representing contrasting geological settings. Field work will be conducted with volcanic gas specialists from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, using their network of stations. Existing active and passive gas sampling protocols will be improved to accurately characterize mercury emissions in terms of their concentrations, mass flux and geochemical speciation.
The candidate will be responsible for conducting field work in Iceland and associated analytical laboratory work at the University of Manitoba.
They will develop a model of volcanic mercury emissions that can be used to calculate an improved inventory of regional to global volcanic mercury flux to the environment, and improve understanding of the geological basis for variations in volcanic mercury emissions.
The student will present their findings in a series of high-quality, peer-reviewed journal papers as well as international conferences.
Supervisor and co-supervisor
This Ph.D. will be based at the University of Manitoba, under the supervision of Professor Feiyue Wang, Centre for Earth Observation Science, and co-supervision of Dr. Peter Outridge from the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa.
