At the Sexual Misconduct Response Centre (SMRC), our mission is to support Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members affected by harmful and inappropriate sexual behaviour by providing confidential supportive counselling, information and facilitated access to resources, as well as supporting them to make informed choices on available options to meet their individual needs. The counsellors at the SMRC provide this service by telephone and through a virtual call centre, and respond to emails received in our positional mailbox. The service is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and counsellors alternate responsibility for line coverage after normal working hours.

Intent of the process

The intent of this staffing process is to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff positions on an indeterminate basis and also to staff positions for specified periods. Individuals hired for a specified period will remain in the pool for future indeterminate positions as they become available.

EDUCATION:

ED1 Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in a relevant social science such as social work, psychology, sexology or criminology.

Note: When education is required, candidates must always have a degree. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must be from a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization. The specialization may also be obtained through an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

E1 Recent* experience in providing crisis intervention in a social service or health care context.

E2 Experience in working with vulnerable populations (ex. trauma, mental or physical illness, etc.).

E3 Experience in working with internal and/or external community stakeholders.

*Recent is defined as having acquired 1 year of experience within the last 3 years.

KNOWLEDGE:

K1 Knowledge of the Sexual Misconduct Response Centre and its history.
K2 Knowledge of the effects of trauma on individual coping and care delivery.
K3 Knowledge of safety planning strategies with clients where suicidal ideation exists.

ABILITIES:

A1 Ability to conduct suicide risk assessment.
A2 Ability to work effectively in stressful situations.
A3 Ability to communicate effectively orally

AED1 Master’s degree in a relevant social science such as social work, psychology, sexology, criminology, or a post-graduate certificate in a relevant field such as victimology, or conflict resolution studies.

AED2 Member of a Recognized Regulatory body related to the position. (ex. OCSWSSW)

AE1 *Recent experience in providing crisis intervention in a social service or health care context.

AE2 Experience in providing support to members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

AE3 Experience in providing support to victims of sexual trauma or violence.

AE4 Experience in telephone counselling/interventions.

AE5 Experience in developing and delivering information briefs/presentations to various audiences.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Requirement to work overtime on short notice.
Requirement to travel on short notice.
Requirement to work in office during core hours of operation which are currently 07h00 to 17h00 EST but are subject to change on short notice. Service is provided 24/7.
Requirement to work on standby from a remote location (ex. home) during week days/nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to provide services from a remote location in a confidential environment during standby hours. Standby hours are rotated on a weekly basis between the counselling staff.
Requirement to have access to functional internet services.
