Duties

Earth-System Program Senior Scientist : Management for the CSA of the planning, execution, study of acquired data and conclusions of the science component of Earth System Science missions, studies and related activities, by coordinating and leading the work of external scientific teams made up of Canadian and foreign scientists, and provision of Earth System Science expertise to CSA management and scientific stakeholders.

Senior Mission Scientist, Earth Observation : Responsible for the development of a portfolio of missions and technologies jointly elaborated with Academia and Government Departments and implemented by aerospace industry to deliver new data for Earth Observation with high science and socio-economic impact.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff 2 permanent positions: Senior Program Scientist, Earth System Science and Senior Program Scientist, Missions and Instruments Development.

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates will be established and could be used to staff similar positions whose length, linguistic profiles and security profiles may vary.

EDUCATION

- Graduation with a Doctoral or Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, Earth sciences, climate science, remote sensing, atmospheric science or some other science relevant to the position.

Note:
The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

- Recent experience in defining science requirements for instruments or systems and in establishing traceability of performance requirements and specifications to science requirements.

- Significant experience in the design of instruments or in remote sensing data utilization.

- Recent experience in designing, proposing, evaluating, or executing complex research projects.

DEFINITIONS:

Significant experience is defined as the performance of duties related to the specific criterion for a period of at least five (5) years. A Ph.D degree is equivalent to 4 years of experience (including the Master). A Master Degree is equivalent to 1 year of experience

Experience is defined as the performance of duties related to the specific criterion for a period of at least one (1) year.

Recent experience is defined as having been acquired within the last ten (10) years.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

- Doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, Earth sciences, climate science, remote sensing, atmospheric science or some other science relevant to the position.

- Experience in the management of a science program.

- Experience in initiating a space mission.

- Experience in the definition, design, simulation and demonstration of an instrument used for remote sensing from space or in situ measurements relating to space environment.

- Experience of leading and managing a team of scientists with direct reporting relationship.

- Experience of staff supervision.

KNOWLEDGE

For the position: Earth System Sciences

- In-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, methods, techniques and practices related to the discipline associated with Earth System sciences.
- Knowledge of recent developments and trends, in Canada and internationally, in the discipline of Earth System sciences.

For the position: Missions and Instruments Developments

- In-depth knowledge of the theories, principles, methods, techniques and practices of at least one key discipline in instrumentation for remote sensing (i.e. radars, interferometers, optical imagers, spectrometers, radiometers, lidar, etc.) or in situ probes for ionosphere and plasma physics (mass spectrometers, ion analyzers, Langmuir probes, etc.).
- Knowledge of the various aspects of the design of a space mission: orbital mechanics, coverage analysis, data processing and handling, power, space environment requirements.
- Knowledge of recent developments and trends, in Canada and internationally, in a key discipline in Earth Observation.
