Duties

The Operation Engineer control the operation and running maintenance of the physical plant containing low pressure boilers and a wide range of HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning). He/she is setting up and monitoring mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment and performing adjustments as necessary according to prescribed procedures. In addition, the Operation Engineer is responding to calls, responsible for trouble shooting, carrying out servicing, repairs and legislated maintenance and responding to emergency situations.

Work environment

The position is under the responsibility of the Integrated Services Manager. In addition to building maintenance, the responsibilities of the integrated services team include security, procurement, materiel management, and certain aspects of finance and human resources. As part of his/her responsibilities, the Facilities Manager will oversee the performance and/or operation of a person or group. The facilities team ensures the continued and un-interrupted (24/7, 365 days/year) operation of facilities infrastructure at an Agriculture and Agri-Food (AAFC) Research and Development Centre (RDC). The facilities infrastructure supports the work of several research teams lead by scientists. The work of the facilities team will support a client base of approximately 100 or more persons.

Although we are looking to fill one (1) position, in the event that more than one candidate is found qualified, a pool of qualified and partially qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures within AAFC.

Interprovincial certification as a fourth class power engineer

IF YOU HAVE FOREIGN CREDENTIALS, please follow the link below for information on how to obtain a degree equivalency. You must obtain an equivalency, at your own expense, in order to be considered for appointment into the public service.

Degree equivalency

Experience in the operation and maintenance of low pressure steam plant and auxiliary equipment, refrigeration equipment and HVAC equipment.
Experience in Grounds keeping.

Information on language requirements

Knowledge of the basic principles relevant to the satisfactory operation and maintenance of low Pressure Steam Heating Plant and auxiliary equipment.
Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of low Pressure Steam Heating Plant, and auxiliary equipment and building systems including hot water heating, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, controls systems.
Ability to conduct and interpret tests of boiler water and determine action.
Knowledge of Legislated Requirements for HVAC equipment.
Ability to respond to equipment malfunctions and adjust plant and equipment in response to varying loads and research requirements.
