Work environment

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is the lead federal Department in managing Canada's fisheries and safeguarding its waters. The Office of Environmental Coordination supports these goals by working with other DFO staff to continuously improve environmental performance and to achieve compliance with our environmental responsibilities. Our team is the lead on the development of an Environmental Management System that supports continuous improvement for all of the environmental aspects of our business.

This dynamic team works together to develop policies, guidance documents, training and to conduct environmental audits to ensure environmental consistency. Intent of the process

This is a one (1) year term position. The anticipated number of position(s) that may be staffed with this advertised process is one (1); however, a pool of qualified candidates will be established through this staffing process and may be used to staff similar positions with different tenures (i.e. on a term, acting or an indeterminate basis) in other locations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with an acceptable specialization in environmental sciences, environmental studies, ecology, biology, geology, chemistry, environmental engineering or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Stream 1: Environmental Officer (Contaminated Sites)

Experience in planning, implementing, and/or managing contaminated sites projects (e.g., Phase I-III Environmental Site Assessments, Risk Assessments, Remediation, Sediment Toxicity Studies)

Experience in the analysis and interpretation of environmental data for the preparation and/or review of technical reports related to contaminated sites

Experience in providing technical advice on matters relating to contaminated sites

Stream 2: Environmental Officer (Environmental Management)

Experience in planning, implementing, and/or managing projects relating to environmental regulatory compliance, environmental impact assessment, greening government, and/or environmental management systems.

Experience working with stakeholders, clients, and/or organizations to improve environmental performance (e.g. greening building operations, environmental stewardship, environmental regulatory compliance).

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Stream 1: Contaminated Sites

Experience conducting phased environmental sites assessments, sediment toxicity studies, risk assessments, and/or remediation, including sample collection, data analysis, and/or writing related technical reports.

Experience managing Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FCSAP) projects or programs.

Stream 2: Environmental Management

Experience conducting environmental inspections or audits which evaluate regulatory compliance and/or which evaluate Environmental Management System performance.

Experience providing energy management services, including monitoring, tracking and reporting on energy consumption, interpreting energy audit results, and/or making recommendations on renewable energy, energy efficiency or sustainable infrastructure.

Stream 1: Contaminated Sites
Knowledge of the federal approach to contaminated sites management under the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan.

Stream 2: Environmental Management
Knowledge of Canada’s federal environmental legislative framework, related to environmental management, including but not limited to the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, and the Federal Sustainable Development Act.

Stream 1 & 2:
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to research, analyze, and provide recommendations on environmental management issues

Stream 1 & 2:
