Assessment accommodation

Intent of the process

This is a full-time indeterminate position. The anticipated number of position(s) that may be staffed with this advertised process is one (1); however, a pool of qualified candidates may be established through this staffing process and may be used to staff similar positions with different tenures (i.e. on a term, acting or an indeterminate basis).

Successful completion of secondary school.

Degree equivalency

- Experience providing technical support for scientific field or laboratory projects in one of the following areas: fish stock assessment, fish ecology, marine mammal stock assessment, marine mammal ecology, fish habitat science, benthic ecology, aquatic invasive species, species at risk, ecosystem science, or oceanography.
- Experience implementing science based standardized protocols
- Experience in the collection of data in field or lab settings.
- Experience using computer software to process data

- Effective interpersonal skills

Graduation with a diploma or degree from a recognised post-secondary institution in a field of natural, physical or applied sciences relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

- Experience conducting scientific technical work:
a) in open waters on medium and large vessels
b) in fresh or coastal waters on small vessels
c) from small aircraft and helicopters
d) in remote areas
e) in the Arctic
- Experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook
- Experience writing procedural, data, or technical reports
- Experience identifying freshwater or marine zooplankton
- Experience identifying freshwater or marine fish
- Experience using field equipment to sample plankton, invertebrate, or fish species
- Experience working with live aquatic organisms in the field or lab
- Experience operating, trailering and launching small vessels
- Experience operating and maintaining or troubleshooting specialized aquatic science field or laboratory equipment
- Experience with modern data collection sensors or technologies (e.g. data storage tags, satellite telemetry, drones)
- Experience operating and maintaining oceanographic equipment (e.g. moorings, water samplers, rosettes)
- Experience working with microscopes in a lab environment
- Experience using digital imaging software (e.g. Leica LAS, Image-Pro, Adobe Photoshop)
- Experience with methods and equipment used to prepare structures for finfish age estimation
- Experience estimating the age of Arctic Char, Lake Trout, or coregonid species (e.g. Lake Whitefish)
- Experience with sample tracking and archiving
- Experience working in a lab environment using quality assurance and quality control protocols to ensure the production of reliable data

- Willingness and ability to:
a) work outdoors under all weather conditions
b) participate in surveys aboard research vessels
c) work in confined spaces
d) climb ladders and work at heights
e) work in harsh field conditions (e.g. hot, humid and noisy environments) while wearing full personal protection equipment (e.g. hard hat, hearing protection, etc.)
f) travel within Canada or internationally, for extended periods
g) engage in moderately strenuous physical activity and lift or lower moderately heavy equipment (18-25 kg)
h) willingness and ability to work flexible hours and overtime
