Duties

The incumbent will work in a plant bioactives/nutrition laboratory focusing on the metabolites and genetics of functional food and nutraceuticals. Main areas of work will be in nutritional genomics and metabolomics laboratory. In the lab the incumbent will contribute to the design and plan of experiments and may adapt methodology when running experiments with different plant and tissue samples for the measurements of microbes and metabolites. The incumbent will contribute data to scientific manuscripts and descriptions of materials and methods. The research technician will be responsible for ensuring that lab equipment runs properly and there are adequate supplies required for uninterrupted research. Research technician will review data on Excel spreadsheets, calculate basic statistics and look for anomalies and errors.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: To staff one (1) full-time permanent position at the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. 

Anticipatory: A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a permanent full-time or part-time basis or on a temporary full-time or part-time basis for the location indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in agriculture, food science, plant biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field of study.

Degree equivalency

Experience providing technical support in a research or laboratory environment.
Experience collecting and performing analysis on samples.
Experience in operating, maintaining and calibrating basic and complex laboratory instrumentation to bioactive samples.
Experience in managing and analyzing bioactive data using a variety of software (eg. word processing, spreadsheet, graphic and statistical analysis).
Experience in designing experiments, developing project plans and developing methodologies and tools.

Knowledge of research methodologies used in a plant bioactives or biochemistry laboratory.

Graduation with a Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in agriculture, food science, plant biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field of study.

Degree equivalency

Experience in basic molecular biology, microbiology and cell culture techniques.
Experience in conducting research in the area of plant derived bioactive molecules.
