Duties

Plans, coordinates and facilitates skill development through a metal trade to enhance the offender reintegration potential; establishes and maintains a positive employment environment with offenders.

Evaluates offender’s work performance in all areas of skills development, fundamental skills, personal management and teamwork skills for input into the Offender Management System; prepares oral and written reports for the benefit of other correctional staff in order to assist them with decision making.

Supervises the operations of a metal shop; supervises, counsels, directsand provides employable skills to inmates in the manufacturing of metal goods and administers the operation of the CORCAN shop.

Carries out all aspects of the fabrication of metal products in keeping with product design or customer requirements.

Orders material, supplies, tools or services required to maintain the enterprise to ensure the production of the highest quality product or service (according to ISO standards where applicable); maintains and controls shop inventory and tools in accordance with institutional and CORCAN security policies; and, provides offender safety training and instructs on proper use and care of the equipment.

Work environment

CORCAN is a key rehabilitation program of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). It contributes to safe communities by providing offenders with employment and employability skills training while incarcerated in federal penitentiaries, and for brief periods of time, after they are released into the community. This is done through on-the-job and third-party certified vocational training that focuses on our four business lines:

1. Manufacturing
2. Textiles
3. Construction
4. Services

CORCAN's work supports the social policy of the Government of Canada to safely reintegrate offenders into society in a way that promotes their success as Canadian citizens.

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to fill similar vacancies of permanent or temporary tenures within Correctional Service of Canada in various locations.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION

Possession of a valid metal trades Certification of Qualifications recognized by the provincial authority, Colleges or Universities (or equivalent Provincial governing body) valid in the designated Province of work.

EXPERIENCE

Experience operating within a modern production environment, in the use and maintenance of metal and related fabrication equipment (e.g. metal brake, shear, punch press, welders).

Experience in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) programming.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of metal materials, fabrications processes and basic welding techniques.
Knowledge of Health and Safety rules and regulations relating to metal fabrication trades (Canada Labour Code and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations).

ABILITIES

Ability to initiate and maintain a worker training program which includes basic instructions related to the metal fabrication trade.
Ability to supervise workers and organize/schedule production to meet deadlines and quality standard.
Ability to expedite, control and requisition raw materials for production in order to maintain minimum inventory quantities.
Ability to implement and maintain a shop safety program.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
