Duties

The Communications Advisor will work as part of a diverse and dynamic communications team within WD that works closely with policy and program areas to:

• develop communication strategies that raise knowledge and awareness of our organization, demonstrate results, and link objectives to compelling results and outcomes;
• develop innovative internal communication practices and activities;
•effectively manage relationships with other government organizations at all levels, external stakeholders, communities and partners;
• facilitate events and activities that advance the objectives of WD at all levels; and
• collaborate and coordinate media relation activities to promote our organizations strategic investments that strengthen Western Canada’s innovation system and a competitive and expanded business sector in Western Canada;

Intent of the process

We intend to fill one permanent full-time position through this process. A pool of qualified candidates may be created for similar vacancies of various tenures and could be shared with Government of Canada organizations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in communications, journalism or a field relevant to the position or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Recent experience providing communications advice and services to managers or clients.

Experience writing and designing communication products, including communication strategies, event and creative materials for internal and external audiences.

Recent experience in planning events and providing related logistical support to a senior official (such as a Minister, Member of Parliament or senior management).

Experience in writing and publishing web content; and experience with programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign.

Recent = within the last three (3) years.

Information on language requirements

Knowledge of modern and innovative internal communication practices, initiatives and tactics.
Knowledge of regional economic development issues in the West.

Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines, while dealing with conflicting priorities.
Ability to interpret complex information and communicate it clearly in a fashion appropriate to the specific audience.
Ability to edit and proofread communications products for grammar and content.

Experience in managing the development and production of web-based multimedia and print publications.
Experience working in communications for any level of government.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

Willingness to travel and work overtime on short notice, including on weekends as required.
Must possess a current and valid driver’s licence.
