Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada across Canada with various language requirements and various security requirements. These positions may be of different tenures.

• Certificate of Apprenticeship for Truck and Coach Technician Trade Code 310T, in the Province of Ontario or equivalent, or a diploma of vocational studies, Heavy-Duty Road Vehicle Mechanics: trade code 5330 of the Ministry of Education, Quebec
OR
• Certificate of Apprenticeship for Heavy Equipment Technician Trade Code 421A, in the Province of Ontario or a Diploma of vocational studies, Construction Equipment Mechanics: trade code 5831 of the Ministry of Education, Quebec
OR
• Certificate of Trade Qualification for Marine Engine Technician Trade Code 435B, in the Province of Ontario or a Diploma of vocational studies, Marine Mechanics: trade code 1250 of the Ministry of Education, Quebec
OR
• Certificate of Trade Qualification for Automotive Service Technician Trade Code 310S, in the province of Ontario or a Diploma of vocational studies, Automobile Mechanics: trade code 5298 of the Ministry of Education, Quebec

Recent and significant* experience in the overhaul** and in-service repair and troubleshooting*** of diesel engines and outboard motors;
OR
Recent and significant* experience in-servicing repair and troubleshooting*** of engine electronic combustion control systems;
OR
Recent and significant* experience in the repair of hull structures, electrical systems, and mechanical systems on vessels under 15 Gross Registered Tons.

AND
Experience in the supervision and management of staff.

*Recent and significant experience means performance of these duties as part of a regular full time position occupied for approximately three (3) years in the past five (5).
**Overhaul means the tear down of the equipment and/or system to individual component levels for servicing.
***In-service repair and troubleshooting means the diagnosing of malfunctioning components and system errors on equipment and/or components that are currently in use to perform its design function.

Successful completion of a co-operative diploma apprenticeship program at a recognized post-secondary institution in any of the trades referred to above as an essential qualification.
Successful graduation from a recognized Post-Secondary institution in Marine Engineering

Degree equivalency

Certificate of Trade Qualification for Truck and Coach Technician, Trade Code 310T, in the Province of Ontario or Inter-Provincial (Red Seal);
Certificate of Trade Qualification for Heavy Equipment Technician, Trade Code 421A, in the Province of Ontario or Inter-Provincial (Red Seal);
Certificate of service technician for marine outboard motors (provide a list of makes and models)
Forklift Operator training certificate;
Overhead Crane Operator training certificate;
Marine Emergency Duties A3 (minimum);
Radio Operator Certificate - Marine;
Standard First Aid training certificate (valid);
CPR training certificate (valid);
Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP);
Valid Ontario Driver's license: Class A with Z Endorsement, or Class A with condition R, or Class D or province of Quebec equivalent

Experience in the use of software such as MAXIMO® (or similar software) for the purpose of tracking maintenance;
Experience in the estimation of cost of materials and time to complete engine and general vessel system repairs.

Knowledge of procedures for the use of hand tools, power tools, and electronic tools;
Knowledge of service, repair and maintenance techniques and procedures for small vessel hull, shafting, and Direct Current (DC) and Alternating Current (AC) electrical systems;
Knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety procedures;
Knowledge of financial management procedures as they relate to the supervision of staff and parts procurement.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing. Please note: The ability to communicate in writing will be assessed using the written material submitted during the application process.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
