Duties

This position is responsible for the following activities:

a. Researches and specifies physical security hardware for building installations, and prepares/provides drawings and documentation to order components and to instruct contracted installers and locksmiths.

b. Researches and specifies physical security fences, barriers and target hardening requirements to secure rooms and structures.

c. Provides advice as the resource expert in areas of training on security hardware; provides feedback and recommendations to MSSS design and research staff on field results of installations, product performance and deficiencies.

d. Provides expertise on maintenance needed to service locks, approved security containers, and "lock-out" safes.

e. Provides forensic investigative assistance on the tampering of mechanical security systems and devices. This can assist investigators in gathering evidence at the crime scene and providing expert witness testimony in court.

Work environment

-The incumbent will be required to travel on a regular basis to various locations in E & M divisions. Thus, much of the work will be completed while away from the office. The incumbent will be required to work as the subject-matter expert of mechanical lock systems.

-Work is conducted in machine shop/welding/spraying/painting facilities and office environments, with occasional periods at construction sites. Machinery and chemical hazards are similar to those encountered in light construction work.

-The incumbent may occasionally have to perform duties in spaces such as rooftops, basements, attics, cellars, crawl spaces, or walk-in freezers. This is an occasional requirement.

-The incumbent may occasionally be expected to wear a bullet proof vest (e.g. for safe houses) when performing duties.

- The office is located at 'E' Division Headquarters in Surrey, BC. There is limited paid parking for staff located within this complex, with a current wait list of 2 to 3 years to obtain a parking pass.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff one permanent full time position.

A qualified group of candidates may be identified and may be used to staff future vacancies (including similar positions, on a term, indeterminate, or acting basis, at full or part time hours) in E Division.

Once established, the qualified pool will be valid for a period of one year and may be extended.

Should a CM be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to another category for the member.

EDUCATION:
1. Diploma or Certification in Mechanical Engineering Technology or in a related field through provincial associations of engineering/applied science. i.e. Machinist, Mechanical Techniques (1or 2 years), Electro-mechanical technician.
OR
2. Certification from a recognized trade school as a locksmith .
OR
3. a secondary school diploma AND an acceptable* combination of education, training and/or experience.

*An acceptable combination is defined as: Possession of a certification in a related field from a recognized educational institution and several years of professional experience working in mechanical security involving the application of security systems to various building and stand-alone equipment.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE :
• *Recent and **significant experience in the installation of security systems to various buildings and stand-alone equipment.
• **Significant experience providing technical physical security advice based on government and industry policy and standards.

* Recent refers to experience gained within the last five years
** Significant experience” is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of duties on a continuous basis over approximately 2 years.
