The GIS Support Physical Scientist provides support and advice to scientific colleagues, and carries out geospatial type of work on Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) projects independently or in collaboration with a team.

The immediate need is to staff one permanent position in Calgary, AB and one term position in Vancouver, BC for a period of approximately two (2) years, until March 31, 2021.
A pool of (fully or partially) qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the PC-02 group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential or Bilingual), various methods for staffing a bilingual position (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), in various locations and with various conditions of employment.

• Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in geology, geography, or some other science related to the position.
Approximately two years recent* experience in the following:
• Coordinating geo-scientific and technical requirements among different user groups.
• Interpreting geoscience or technical information and preparing technical, scientific or policy-related reports/guidelines.
• Providing recommendations to technical or professional audiences or management.
• Managing geoscience information and/or data using data/information management tools.
• Using Geographic Information Systems such as ESRI ArcGIS 10x, or other ESRI products to manage data, prepare maps and disseminate various products (e.g. maps, articles).
• Manipulating, processing and/or analyzing geospatial data.
• Manipulating, processing and/or analyzing bedrock or surficial geology data.
* "Recent" refers to experience gained in the last five (5) years

• Knowledge of ISO19115 metadata standards and how it relates to information management.
• Knowledge of the functioning of geodatabases and data models.
• Knowledge of components on a map produced by the Government of Canada.

• Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary educational institution with acceptable specialization in Geographic Information Systems or remote sensing/earth observation.
• Experience conducting geoscience field work.
• Experience programming in C#, Java, Oracle and/or XML and/or GIS relational database administration (e.g. ArcSDE).
• Knowledge of cartographic considerations.
• Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL).
• Knowledge of Python programming.
