The Specialized Health Services Directorate (SHSD) delivers occupational health advice and services to meet the Government of Canada’s priorities regarding the occupational health of the federal public service.

The Senior Medical Advisor (SMA) is the most senior occupational health professional within the federal Public Service – Canada’s largest workforce. This senior-level position, residing in the Public Service Occupational Health Program, requires an experienced medical professional who is a catalyst for change and innovation in the occupational health field. S/he will bring clinical expertise and digital savviness to modernizing occupational health services to public servants occupying safety-sensitive positions in a wide range of federal departments and agencies located in Canada and abroad. Be part of a national clinical team - comprised of medical officers, industrial hygienists, nurse practitioners and occupational health nurses – protecting and promoting the mental health and physical well-being of public servants serving Canadians every day.
The Senior Medical Advisor (SMA) provides clinical leadership to all health professional staff within the Public Service Occupational Health Program through a collaborative approach with a multi-disciplinary practice. The duties include providing occupational health advice and expertise to other government departments, building relationships with key stakeholders, and leading or contributing multi-disciplinary committees, working groups and networks.
Health Canada's Public Service Occupational Health Program within Corporate Services Branch is a national organization, with a wide variety of work that can be performed regardless of geographic location. However, certain positions may require a physical presence at a specific location. PSOHP's regional locations outside of the NCR are : Halifax, Montreal, Edmonton, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver.
The position is located in the National Capital Region (Ottawa, ON). The *Mercer quality of living survey (2018) ranked Ottawa 19th out of 230 cities for best quality of living in the world. The city has an abundance of parks and waterways for you and your family to explore.

This process will be used to staff one (1) indeterminate position with BBB/BBB linguistic profile. A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be created and may be used to staff similar positions at an identical or equivalent group and level with various languages proficiencies (Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB, Bilingual Imperative CBC/CBC, English Essential), with various security profiles and various tenures using various staffing activities for positions within Health Canada and Public Health Agency of Canada.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
OC1: A valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a province or territory of Canada, in the province or territory in which the candidate is licensed to practice*.
*Candidates must meet and maintain the above conditions of employment throughout their employment .
EXPERIENCE:
EX1: Experience in providing scientific and medical advice /guidance relating to occupational medicine.
ASSET EXPERIENCE:
AEX1: Experience in leading organizational change or transformation.
AEX2: Experience leading and working within multidisciplinary teams.
AEX3: Experience managing complex issues related to occupational health within a Federal/ provincial government context and /or public or para public organizations.
AEX4: Experience in representing a national organization and developing strategic relationships with key stakeholders, domestic and/or international, on occupational health related issues.
AEX5: Experience in providing strategic advice and recommendations to management.
AEX6: Experience in the field of epidemiology including:
• development and implementation of a health surveillance program
• data analysis, including techniques necessary for data derived from surveys using complex sampling.
AEX7: Experience in developing and leading an appeal/review process relating to complex clinical decisions.

EDUCATION:
ED1: Graduation with a Medical Doctorate from a recognized school of medicine.
Formal certification in the area of Occupational Medicine such as:
• Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) in Occupational Medicine, or
• Masters degree in Occupational Health (MSc or MPH), or
• Certificate from the Canadian Board of Occupational Medicine (CBOM)or
• Recognized International Occupational Health Certification.
KNOWLEDGE:
K1: Knowledge of current occupational health conditions and issues.
K2: Knowledge of leading trends and innovations in the delivery of occupational health programs.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Reliability Status security clearance
Maintain an independent license to practice medicine without restriction and in good standing, in a province or Territory of Canada with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in the province in which the candidate is currently licensed to practice.
