By bringing together translators, interpreters and terminologists under one roof, the Translation Bureau is one of the biggest employers of language professionals in Canada.As a long-standing provider of sign language interpretation services, the Translation Bureau is committed to providing high quality services to federal public employees who are Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing. The Translation Bureau's conference interpreters provide simultaneous and consecutive sign language interpretation services. Interpretation services include combinations of French, Langue des Signes québécoise (LSQ) or English, American Sign Language (ASL). Interpretation situations may include, but are not limited to the activities of Parliament, hearings of parliamentary committees of the House of Commons and the Senate, as well as various conferences and events (e. g. meetings and training) organized by government departments and agencies.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this selection process is to staff permanent positions. This process could also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates that could be used to fill similar or identical positions.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION
Bachelor's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution
AND
Diploma of ASL-English Interpreter Education Program (AEIP).*

*A combination of training and experience in ASL-English interpretation could be considered as an alternative to an AEIP. The following combination could be considered:
20 years of experience as an ASL-English interpreter
AND
Over the past 5 years, 35 hours per year of professional development related to the field of interpretation.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Translation Bureau accreditation as an ASL-English conference interpreter.

EXPERIENCE
A minimum of two (2) years of continuous experience in conference interpretation over the last three (3) years.

Experience working within a project team, including active participation in decision-making and project delivery.

Recent experience* in mentoring or supporting novice sign language interpreters.
*Recent experience is defined as experience acquired in the past three (3) years.

EDUCATION
Completed or ongoing Graduate Studies.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Teaching experience.

Experience working as a Video Remote Interpreter.

Experience teaming with a Deaf Interpreter.

Experience in an accreditation process for ASL-English interpreters (for example but not limited to : evaluator, trainer, coordinator, development of evaluation materials)

Secret security clearance

The work hours are sometimes irregular and can include work in the evening and on weekends.

Candidates must have a valid driver's licence.

Candidates must be willing and able to travel in Canada and the United States.

Candidates must be wiling and able to use a mobile device and laptop.
