The environmental impacts research team at CanmetENERGY in Devon is seeking a director to provide scientific leadership and management for the delivery of its research programs in the understanding and management of the environmental impacts of oil and gas production. This is a multidisciplinary team of professional and technical staff responsible for developing and carrying out research in air emissions, water quality, tailings, and land reclamation as they relate to oil and gas development, including oil spill behaviour. Environmental team members conduct in-house research as well as field work, both in Canada and internationally.
The director:
• Directs and manages a research program into mitigating the environmental impacts of fossil fuel resource development, with a focus on unconventional fossils fuels.
• Is responsible for developing, with their team, short-, mid- and long-term research programs related to understanding and minimizing the environmental impacts of resource development, related, but not limited to the development of conventional and unconventional fossil fuels.
• Provides authoritative advice (relevant, and scientifically sound) to federal politicians, senior departmental and sector management, and the CanmetENERGY-Devon director general.
The director has to be an excellent communicator, able to synthesise complex scientific information and be able to present it clearly and concisely to non-experts.

The CanmetENERGY laboratory in Devon (AB) brings together scientists, engineers and technologists in a state-of-the-art R&D facility. We focus on providing innovative solutions for the environmentally-responsible production and processing of hydrocarbon resources, and for mitigating the associated environmental impacts of these operations. CanmetENERGY in Devon collaborates with industry, provincial/territorial governments, academic institutions, and international organizations in this research. Education:
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences such as chemistry, biology, environmental science, or environmental or geotechnical engineering, or another field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position, or the employer approved alternative*
* The employer-approved alternative is an acceptable master's or bachelor's degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree caliber.
Experience in managing scientific research teams;
Experience in managing scientific research programs;
Significant* experience in conducting scientific research;
Experience in short and long term planning of research programs;
Experience in report writing and oral communication to academic, senior management, and public audiences;
Experience managing budgets.
*Significant is defined as skills normally acquired over a period of 5 years.
