Assessment accommodation

Duties

The position consists of using a geographical information system (GIS) to interpret different satellite based images (visible, infrared, passive microwave and synthetic aperture radar (SAR)) to identify and analyze sea and lake ice. Ice analysis charts are created and issued within tight deadlines. The ice analyses are principally used by mariners to avoid the ice or to find an efficient route through the ice.
In addition, the analyst monitors Canadian waters for potential illegal pollution discharges and provides reports to responding agencies.

The image analyst will advise or prepare reports for clients on current or climatological ice conditions. They will be responsible for monitoring the reception of incoming data and report deficiencies to appropriate entities. The position may also involve collaborating with, and participating in, scientific and technical research.

Intent of the process

The intent of this anticipatory process is to have a pool of qualified candidates to staff this and similar positions with various tenures within Environment and Climate change Canada in the National Capital Region.

College diploma/certificate or university degree from a recognized institution with an acceptable specialization in geography, geographic information system (GIS), oceanography, meteorology, remote sensing or in a scientific discipline related to the position.

Successful completion of at least 1 GIS course from a recognized post-secondary university or college.

EXPERIENCE:
Recent experience* interpreting satellite images for sea or lake ice conditions
Recent experience* interpreting satellite images for marine oil pollution
Experience working in the field of meteorology or oceanography.
Experience working with Geographic Information system (GIS) software.

*This would usually be acquired by analyzing a minimum of two satellite images per week for a period of at least 6 months within the past 3 years.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Shift work – rotating shifts covering 6:00 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week for an average of 37.5 hours per week. Possible night shifts.
Willing and able to work overtime.
