Duties

Directs and manages the research programs and financial and human resources of the Climate Modelling and Analysis Section consisting of scientists, visiting fellows, technical, professional and support staff. Main research fields include the development and evaluation of global and regional climate models and seasonal forecast modelling systems, and the application of such models to understanding the climate system, the influence of human activities on the climate system, and development of climate scenarios. This research informs climate change adaptation and mitigation decisions. The incumbent will: direct research programs of international calibre to create and advance knowledge in the area of climate model development and use to address questions related to climate change adaptation and mitigation in Canada and globally, including an understanding of the causes of changes; manage section’s financial and human resources; advise Environment and Climate Change Canada senior management on the relevance or implications of new research results; develop and maintain effective national and international research partnerships; provide the climate prediction and scenarios information: provide climate science advice relevant to policy and regulatory interests; and have some opportunity to conduct own research on climate change and variability within the scope of the section’s mandate.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one English essential, indeterminate position in Victoria, B.C.: Manager Climate Modelling and Analysis Section.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff similar positions within Environment and Climate Change Canada with various tenures (e.g. indeterminate, term, acting, assignment, secondment), language requirements and/or profiles and conditions of employment (including security).

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural sciences or discipline related to the duties of the position, or the employer approved alternative.

Note: The employer-approved alternative is an acceptable master's degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.

Degree equivalency

Recent* experience in prioritizing, planning and implementing earth system science programs or multiple related projects.

* Recent means in the past five (5) years

Experience establishing and maintaining earth system science research partnerships or collaborations with federal, academic, private sector, non-governmental or international organizations, in order to advance climate system knowledge.

Recent* experience in management of scientific or technical human resources**, and financial and material resources.

* Recent means in the past five (5) years.

** Human resources management is defined as: candidates must clearly demonstrate that they have supervised staff, and/or assigned work, and/or managed and assessed performance and/or developed staffing plans or contributed to their development (must have two of the four criteria, and indicate the number of staff supervised).

Experience in the synthesis of environmental science and exchange of this information with decision makers in public or private sector or non-governmental organization.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Experience undertaking and publishing own scientific research in the field of climate model development and evaluation; seasonal to decadal scale climate prediction; or applications of climate models for climate science studies.

Experience in Leadership or participation in national or international multi-agency climate research projects or climate science assessments.

Experience providing relevant and timely science information and advice for climate policy or regulatory or environmental assessment.

Experience in the development or provision of climate data or modelling (scenario) products for climate services.
