Work environment

Intent of the process

A pool of partially qualified candidates will be established and will be used to staff identical or similar positions with various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual Imperative, BBB/BBB) and various security requirements within the Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada across Canada. These positions may be staffed on an indeterminate or temporary basis.

ED1: Education - Common to all Streams:

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry, biology, earth or environmental science, geomatics or geography, or some other science relevant to the position.

Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EX1: Experience for all streams:

Experience in writing or summarizing scientific and technical information or manipulation of data for the preparation documents such as reports, briefing materials, presentations or correspondence

Stream 1 – Water Quality/Quantity Science

EX2: Experience in applying scientific and technically recognized methods and protocols for the collection of environmental samples in the field

Stream 1 – Water Quality/Quantity Science

EX3: Experience in collecting, analyzing, interpreting and managing environmental samples or data.

Stream 2 – Wildlife and Landscape Science

EX4: Experience in analysis and interpretation of ecological information from field and / or remote sensing data sources.

Stream 3 – Chemical, Biological and Toxicology Assessment and Analysis and Pollutant Release Inventories

EX5: Experience in supporting or contributing to multidisciplinary activities, projects or programs related to science or technology

AEX1: Experience in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) computer software or imaging processing software such as ArcGIS, PCI-Geomatica, or MathWorks-MATLAB, R, Python or statistical analysis software such as SYSTAT.

AEX2: Experience in the use of spreadsheets or in the development of databases or the use or maintenance or large datasets.

AEX3: Experience contributing to the development or implementation of scientific or technical policies, regulations, programs or initiatives relating to environmental protection.

AEX4: Experience working with Indigenous communities/organizations.

AEX5: Experience in aquatic research or monitoring

AK2: Knowledge of scientific or engineering principles and methodologies to characterize and predict the environmental fate and effects of chemicals or living organisms.

AK3: Knowledge of nutrient and carbon cycling in managed and unmanaged ecosystems and the impact of land use change on these ecosystems.

Applicants must complete the Public Service Entrance Exam: Test of Reasoning Unsupervised Internet Test (UIT) as part of the screening for this selection process. This test assesses reasoning and problem solving ability. You will have 90 minutes to complete the test. You must complete the test before you submit your application for this position.
