Graduate Research Assistant - Research Affiliate Program

Duties

Under the supervision of a research scientist in conjunction with a university professor from the university where the student is recruited, the candidate will conduct research in the area of microbiology, molecular biology, and chicken physiology, such as determining the responses (including those at the molecular or genomic level) of chickens and their gut microbiota to pathogen infection, alternatives to antibiotics and other work as requested.

Work environment

The lab is located at the Guelph Research and Development Centre – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Guelph, On). The incumbent will apply molecular biological and microbiological techniques and be working with a food safety research team. The project aims for developing alternative to antibiotics to and reducing the use of antibiotics while improve poultry gut health and product safety.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Applicants must have completed a bachelor degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in animal science/microbiology or relevant field

Currently enrolled or eligible to in a full time Master program from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in Animal Science or pathobiology.

Degree equivalency

Experience in culturing bacteria and microbial ecology research.

Experience in molecular biological techniques (e.g. but not limited to: PCR, cloning, and mutant characterization).

Experience in animal research and handling farm animals.

Experience in bioinformatics.

Note: In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
