Duties

What Will You Be Doing

As the Regional Nurse Educator you will:
• provide professional support, leadership, advice and direction to nurses on policy, practice and programs
• develop, implement and evaluate new initiatives to enhance the quality and delivery of nursing practice
• provide advice, assistance and consultation on all nursing education matters to First Nation leadership[ and communities to build capacity with employers of nurses
• promote a safe, healthy, respectful and learning work environment in the communities where nurses work
• establish collaborative relationships with provincial/local nurse leaders, professional associations and provincial/private organizations that have a relationship with the provision of health services to First Nation communities
• coordinate education and resources for nurses receiving orientation, training, and certification, in collaboration with the regional and national requirements
• serve as resource and clinical support, for the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and mentoring related to nursing practice, to nurses and nursing students working within First Nation communities
• plan, implement and evaluate a general clinical orientation program to meet the needs of new nurses
• assist in evaluating the efficacy of nursing education programming: including in service, professional development, and national policy
• represent Regional Nursing program interests on advisory groups, associations and committees as determined by the Director of Nursing
• work collaboratively with the committee members to establish and implement nursing practice and administration guidelines in the Region as a member of the Nursing Practice and Education Committee
• manage the Nursing Education cost centre budget
• work in collaboration with the Nurse Educator for Professional Development to coordinate the implementation of education plans
• develop and maintain effective partnerships and liaisons with organizations such as Universities, Professional Associations, Hospitals, Public Health, and Home Care concerning professional development for nurses in the region
• assess, introduce and evaluate new technologies in education delivery that assist nurses’ clinical education and professional development, such as Personal Data Assistants (PDAs), Web CT, video conferencing

What to Expect:
Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) is looking to staff a Regional Nurse Educator position in the Regional Nursing Office.

Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) works collaboratively with partners to improve access to high quality services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Our vision is to support and empower Indigenous peoples to independently deliver services and address the socio-economic conditions in their communities.

In Alberta there are 45 rural/remote First Nation communities. You will occasionally be expected to travel to these communities to connect with the health teams and provide clinical advice, support and consultation.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a term, acting and/or permanent basis in Edmonton, Alberta.

Education:
A Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience:
Recent and significant* experience as a Registered Nurse in the area of practice of Primary Health Care [which includes Primary Care, Community/Public Health, and/or Home Care]

Experience managing continuing education and staff development programs.

Experience assessing nursing knowledge, skills and competencies to determine learning needs.

*Recent and Significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the full time performance of duties for a minimum period of three years within the last five years.

Education:
A Master’s Degree in Adult Education from a Canadian University or a recognized equivalent.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Experience in developing, facilitating and/or brokering educational courses

Experience in preceptorship/mentorship and methodologies

Experience in all areas of primary health care nursing (primary care, public health, and home care)

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
Travel to remote locations on gravel roads or small aircraft.

Overtime may be required in the event of a Public Health emergency or outbreak situation.
