Duties

The Registry Officers role is to:

Provide registry operations and case management services in support of inquiries and hearings conducted by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT). These hearings are in response to complaints against perceived discriminatory practices under the Canadian Human Rights Act.

Implement established operational procedures from receipt of a complaint, through the administration of the mediation process, the hearing process, proofreading and rendering of Tribunal decisions and rulings, as well as responding to the judicial review process, to the closing of a case file.

Prepare briefing notes, case summaries, summaries of conference calls or hearings, and summaries of preliminary motions for consideration of Members of the Tribunal.

Serve as the point of contact for assigned cases to provide pertinent advice and recommendations to the Tribunal and to parties and/or their representatives and to members of the public.

Plan and provide administrative and logistic services for Tribunal proceedings; participate at case conferences and hearings and manage/coordinate the related processes;

Respond to related enquiries from the parties and/or their representatives, the public and the media at hearings, and resolve on­ the-spot problems related to the hearing process and procedures.

Work environment

Created in November 2014, the Administrative Tribunals Support Service of Canada (ATSSC) is responsible for providing support services and facilities to 11 federal administrative tribunals by way of a single, integrated organization.

The Registry Officer position provides registry operations and case management services in support of inquiries and hearings conducted by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT).

Registry Officers work in various settings, including office settings in Ottawa and public court/hearing rooms across Canada.

Intent of the process

A fully or partially assessed pool may be created and may be used to staff similar positions at an identical or equivalent group and level within the Administrative Tribunals Support Service of Canada.

EDUCATION

Graduation from a post-secondary school program with specialization in paralegal studies, public or business administration or in another relevant field or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

E1. Experience in the operational setting of a federal, provincial and/or territorial Court, Tribunal, Board, Commission, law firm, or equivalent.

E2. Experience in reviewing and formatting judgments, orders, or similar types of documents issued by a Court, Tribunal, Board, Commission, law firm, or equivalent.

E3. Experience analyzing diverse types of documentation filed by lawyers or self-represented litigants to assess accuracy, urgency and completeness of information in order to recommend the best course of action to Management.

E4. Experience in tracking and managing cases and/or official record management.

E5. Experience in interpreting and applying acts, regulations or administrative guidelines.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in the registry operations of a court or quasi-judicial tribunal.

Experience performing duties of a court registrar during judicial proceedings.

Conditions of employment

Willing and able to travel within Canada, including weekends, for periods up to three weeks
