Information on accommodation for persons with disabilities
As a member of a multidisciplinary research team, the incumbent will provide technical leadership, analytical support and expertise for quantifying organic and inorganic contaminants in biological and environmental samples relating to whales, their prey and habitat. This will involve developing and implementing analytical methods, preparing and analyzing biological and environmental samples, processing and validating analytical data, and providing technical support and advice on sample collection and preservation. It will also involve contributing to the interpretation of results, the preparation of reports and scientific manuscripts, and the training of support staff and external partners/stakeholders in sample collection and handling, as well as providing supervision of the mass spectrometry and trace organic labs at IOS.
A pool of qualified persons resulting from this process may be used to fill similar positions of various tenures in the Pacific Region.
The immediate intent of this process is to staff 1 position on a term basis (and may be extended based on operational requirements).

Education
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, analytical chemistry or biochemistry from a recognized university or post-secondary institution.
Experience
• Experience providing specialized analysis of organic and inorganic contaminants in biological and environmental samples.
• Experience delivering analytical results within the context of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) standards and procedures.
• Experience developing analytical methods.
• Experience operating and maintaining sophisticated, automated chemical analysis instrumentation, including liquid chromatographs and mass spectrometers.
• Experience in project management and supervision of personnel.
• Experience providing recommendations concerning the collection, preservation, and analysis of biological and environmental samples.
• Experience publishing scientific papers in analytical chemistry, aquatic chemistry or environmental science.
Experience
• Experience managing financial, human and materiel resources within the context of an analytical chemical laboratory.
• Experience collecting biological or environmental samples for trace organic or inorganic analysis.
• Experience acting as scientific authority for approved professional/external service contracts in the Federal Government.
• Experience writing standard operating procedures.
• Experience writing project proposals that support chemical analysis and/or method development.
