Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to establish pools of qualified candidates for two streams:
STREAM 1: Technical Maintenance Planner Coordinator Maritime & Civil Infrastructure (MCI) Production
STREAM 2: Technical Maintenance Planner Coordinator Maritime & Civil Infrastructure (MCI) Environmental Response (ER)

The immediate intent is to staff multiple positions on an indeterminate basis. Candidates interested in working in either Dartmouth (NS), Charlottetown (PEI), Saint John (NB), or St. John's (NL) are encouraged to apply.

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be created to staff positions at this group and level with various linguistic requirements and profiles, various security requirements, various conditions of employment, as well as various tenures (permanent and temporary) within the Canadian Coast Guard.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:

STREAM 1:
• Graduation with a degree, diploma or certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution as a Technician/Technologist/Tradesperson in the field of electrical, mechanical or civil .

STREAM 2:
• Red Seal Trade Certification or a 4th Class Marine Engineering Certificate, related to the maintenance of such equipment as small engines, diesel engines, hydraulic pumps, or generators.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

STREAM 1:
• Experience working on or in support of a project team focused on such activities as; planning, construction and renovation of civil infrastructure, (structures or buildings).

STREAMS 1 and 2:
• Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team comprised of any combination of the following: clients, service providers, subject matter experts, contractors, or stakeholders.
• Experience in preparing project documents such as: specifications, requests for proposal, statements of work or project briefings.
• Significant* experience with procurement and contracting.
• Significant* experience in maintenance planning.

*Significant means six months within the last five years.

• Certification as a professional Engineering Technologist or Technician in Canada.
• Graduation with a Bachelor of Technology Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
STREAMS 1 and 2:
• Experience in the construction , installation and renovation of marine aids to navigation.

STREAM 2:
• Knowledge of the Incident Command System.

STREAMS 1 and 2:
• Ability to analyze problems and recommend solutions.
• Ability to operate a computer using MS office software such as Internet Explorer, Excel, Word and Outlook at an intermediate level or higher.
• Ability to communicate orally.
• Ability to communicate in writing.

• Requirement to work overtime as required, and at times with little notice.

ASSESSMENT

Candidates must meet all the essential qualifications to be appointed to a position.

You may be assessed using a variety of assessment tools, such as, but not limited to: standardized tests, written exams, interviews, simulation exercises, reference checks, recent and past performance evaluations, self-assessments, candidate achievement record, etc.

Assessments will be conducted at locations of the employer's choice (DFO/CCG offices) and may require candidates to travel to the assessment location. Candidates will be required to pay for their own travel expenses when invited for assessment.

Please note that your overall conduct and communications, including email correspondence, throughout the entire process may be used in the assessment of qualifications and competencies.

You must provide proof of your education credentials. If you were educated outside of Canada, you must have your certificates and/or diplomas assessed against Canadian education standards. For more information please click on “Degree Equivalency” in the Education section above.

Please note that achieving the pass mark on any of the assessments used does not mean you will move forward in the selection process. Management may decide to use a score that is higher than the pass mark on any of the evaluations used throughout the selection process. Management may also decide to use top-down or random selection at any stage of the process.

Management may choose to invoke an asset(s) at any point of the process.
