Under the general direction of the Canadian Hazards Information Service (CHIS), design, develop, construct, test, calibrate, assemble, install, operate and maintain networks of remote geophysical observatories and instruments at field service sites across Canada, including extreme north, and overseas. Monitor the transmission of live data from remote observatories to CHIS data acquisition hubs in Ottawa, Victoria and Yellowknife, take immediate corrective measures when connections to the hubs are halted.

The immediate need is to staff a position in Ottawa for a one-year period. A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the EL-05 group and level at Natural Resources Canada, with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative), language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual) and profiles (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability Status, Secret), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

A covering letter in 2,500 words (maximum) "Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their cover letter how they meet the education and experience factors listed in the essential qualifications. A secondary school diploma and completion of a recognized and acceptable three year training program in electronics technology or equivalency.
Significant* experience working as an electronic technologist or technician, in an environment where at least 5 of the following experiences were obtained:
Operation and maintenance of advanced analog and digital test and measurement devices (such as spectrum analyzer, digital signal generator, VSAT measuring devices, or other engineering test equipment).
Design and development of electronic equipment, working prototypes, geophysical instruments, computer interfaces and power supplies including AC and photovoltaic including selection of components for procurement.
Testing, evaluating and monitoring electronic equipment and instrumentation.
Documentation and presentation of the results.
Maintenance and repair of a variety of electronic devices and geophysical equipment (such as digitizers, magnetometers, seismometers, infrasound sensors, radio modems, VSAT modems, GPS interfaces and power supplies).
Maintenance of calibration standards for reference equipment and precise calibration of geophysical digitizers and sensors.
Working of computers and standard operating systems including Windows, Unix and Linux.
Advanced use of computer software, including standard serial and IP communication and office automation packages, data logging, reporting, inventory, shipping and client-servers based systems.
Reading, documenting, and modifying code in Assembler, C, LabView or programmable logic.
*Significant will be assessed on the basis of the scope, recent nature, complexity and diversity of the work performed.
