Intent of the process

The intent of this staffing action is to staff a permanent full-time position in Surrey, BC. Alternate staffing locations may be considered after the selection of a candidate. These locations include Surrey (EHQ), Victoria, Nanaimo, Chilliwack (PRTC), Kelowna, Kamloops, Terrace, Prince Rupert and Prince George.

A qualified group of candidates may be identified and may be used to staff future vacancies (including similar positions on a temporary or permanent basis at full or part time hours).

Once established, the qualified pool will be valid for a period of one year and may be extended.

Should a Civilian Member be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to another category for the member. Notification regarding the Civilian Member appointment will be sent to all applicable candidates who are within the area of selection and participated in the advertised process.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education: (Amendment to Education)
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in occupational health and safety management, industrial hygiene, public health or environmental health or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience relative to the work to be performed.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
Certification as an occupational safety specialist, industrial hygienist or public health inspector. This includes, but is not limited to certification as a:
1. Canadian Registered Safety Professional by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals;
2. Registered Occupational Hygienist or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist by the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists;
3. Industrial Hygienist or Occupational Health and Safety Technologist by the American Board of Hygiene or jointly with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals;
4. Certified Health and Safety Consultant by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering;
5. Public Health Inspector (Canada) by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors Board of Certification.

Experience:
E1. *Recent and **significant experience coordinating an occupational health and safety program (risk prevention program, job hazard analyses, workplace accident management program, etc.), policies, procedures, projects or directives.
E2. *Recent and **significant experience providing advice and guidance regarding the interpretation and/or application of federal or provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation including Acts, Codes, Regulations, Standards and/or industry codes of practice.
E3. *Recent experience in conducting investigations, inspections and providing training.
E4. Experience in managing human resources.
E5. Experience in supervising Occupational Health and Safety Officers such as monitoring work plans, schedule coverage for all OSOs in their assigned areas, provide training, monitor performance, etc.

* “Recent experience” is normally associated with the performance of these duties as part of your major job duties within the last five years.
**”Significant experience” means the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with the performance of duties on a continuous basis over approximately 12 months.

Note: Experience as a member of an occupational health and safety committee alone is insufficient.

Operational Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent.
Willingness and ability to travel for work and/or training purposes via the following modes of transport:

• Government aircraft (including helicopters), small boats and larger ships

Conditions of employment

RCMP Secret security clearance
Requirement to occasionally work irregular hours, overtime, sometimes on short notice
Requirement to occasionally travel
Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent or personal mobility to the degree normally associated with a driver’s licence
Requirement to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to personal flotation devices, protective footwear, respiratory protection and fall protection equipment. Some of these items may be heavy or cumbersome.
