Physical Scientist (PC) work at DFO is focused on Ocean Monitoring, Ocean Modelling, and Ocean Science Data Analysis. In general terms, a Physical Scientist III employee is expected to: plan, conduct and lead multidisciplinary at-sea, field, laboratory, or computer ocean modelling studies; develop new instrumentation, methods, technology and quality control/assurance procedures and protocols for the collection, analysis, and/or management of ocean science data; supervise support staff; develop quantitative models to analyze and interpret data; prepare and present reports in support of requests for advice from management; contribute to the peer review of reports and scientific publications; publish as lead author and co-author of technical reports and primary publications; and contribute to the scientific understanding of the state and change of Canada's Oceans.
Anticipated Staffing: 1 position to be staffed indeterminately but may be used to staff other tenures and other similar positions within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada in Moncton, NB or Mont-Joli, QC.

EDUCATION
- Graduation with a post graduate Degree in Physical Oceanography from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in one of the following areas: ocean circulation modeling, atmosphere-ocean interaction modelling or ocean wave modelling.
EXPERIENCE
- Experience conducting scientific work related to physical, chemical or biological oceanography, aquaculture, meteorology or other relevant environmental science;
- Experience in analyzing spatially and/or temporally variable oceanographic, model output, meteorological, environmental, aquaculture or engineering data using computer programming or scripting languages (e.g. SQL, C++, Python, Fortran, Matlab, IDL, or R, etc.);
- Significant* experience in implementing, improving and applying ocean circulation models (e.g. FVCOM and/or NEMO) to research problems;
- Experience providing scientific advice related to assigned scientific projects;
- Experience preparing and writing scientific papers or technical documents.
*Significant is understood to mean the depth and breadth normally associated with having regularly performed these duties over a period of approximately 5 years.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in implementing and managing scientific research projects.
- Experience in the regional climate downscaling of global simulations of the atmosphere and/or the ocean.
- Experience in scientific software development, computer programming, testing and debugging in support of scientific activities such as data analysis, data archival/access, data presentation, GIS, environmental modeling or model data assimilation.
- Experience in analyzing large data sets.
- Experience in data processing and analysis in formats such as NetCDF, HDF, Ascii, Grib.
- Experience in conducting multi-disciplinary studies in science, engineering or other relevant fields.
- Experience working in a Unix/Linux computing environment.
- Experience in verifying ocean circulation models with in situ or remotely sensed data (can include but not limited to satellite imagery, multibeam acoustics, sidescan sonar, and LiDar).
- Experience in computer scripting /programming for data visualization and presentation via a web browser.
- Experience in publishing research results in scientific journals, technical reports, publications or scientific manuscripts.
