Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to hire two positions immediately: one in West Vancouver and one in Nanaimo. A pool will be created in anticipation of future vacancies in Prince Rupert, Nanaimo, Delta and Kamloops. This pool may also be used for staffing of similar positions of various tenures throughout Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience in managing financial, human and material resources
Experience in building and managing teams that can implement science projects or programs, particularly relating to one or more of the following: (i) near-shore marine or estuarine ecosystems; (ii) salmon stock assessment; or (iii) marine invertebrate assessment.
Experience in preparing briefing materials and carrying out briefings for senior management at the executive level on program planning and implementation, issue management, and/or client services.
Experience working in collaboration with other levels of government, scientific and technical experts, industry representatives, ENGOs or the public
Experience in writing technical reports, briefings or other similar documents or publications.
Experience in presenting science programs and advice to a wide range of audiences including First Nations, Industry representatives, other clients, or the public.

Ability to communicate complex scientific issues effectively orally and in writing.

Effective leadership and motivational skills.
Working effectively with others
Thinking things through
Demonstrating integrity and respect
Showing initiative and being action-orientated

M.Sc. or Ph.D. with specialisation in marine biology or marine ecology.

Degree equivalency

Experience in managing fisheries stock assessment and/or monitoring programs.
Experience in the application of scientific theories and/or concepts to address issues related to the conservation of fish or fish habitat in marine or freshwater systems.
Experience in the application of scientific theories and/or concepts to address issues related to fisheries stock assessment in marine or freshwater systems.
Experience in the application of stock assessment concepts and policies relevant to DFO’s sustainable fisheries framework and the precautionary approach.
Experience in conducting research projects related to finfish or shellfish aquaculture
Experience in conducting research and assessment projects related to Species at Risk
Experience in developing innovative solutions to complex scientific problems in collaboration with other professionals.
Experience in exercising authority under section 34 of the Financial Administration Act
Experience in the application or implementation of policies and/or guidelines relating to occupational safety and health in the workplace.
Experience with policies and guidelines related to animal care in a research setting, and their application to fish and/or invertebrate research and husbandry.
Experience in developing and implementing program management frameworks / processes in order to deliver required outputs such as strategic advice for decision makers.
Experience in managing large and diverse teams.

Operational Requirements

Mobility associated with possession of a valid BC Drivers licence.

Willingness and ability to carry out field work offshore in small boats and larger research vessels.
