Education:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or in a field relevant to the duties of the position OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience relevant to the position.
Experience:
Experience in the development of microbiology and molecular biology techniques for the detection and identification of bacterial or viral or parasitic pathogens.

Knowledge:
Knowledge of methods for isolation, identification and enumeration of foodborne pathogens.
Knowledge of emerging technologies and principles related to foodborne pathogen detection and identification.
Knowledge of foodborne bacterial, viral or parasitic pathogens and their safe handling.
Knowledge of microbiological and molecular biology techniques and principles.
Knowledge in experimental design and troubleshooting of techniques in microbiology and molecular biology.
Abilities:
Ability to analyse and interpret experimental data.
Ability to set up and carry out laboratory procedures with limited supervision.
Ability to provide scientific and technical advice.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Ability to work under pressure with shifting priorities under tight deadlines.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Experience working* with foodborne pathogens in a laboratory setting.
(*6 months or more)
Experience working with non-cultivable microorganism.
Experience with cell culture techniques.
Experience using genomic approaches including large dataset analysis.
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
Willingness and ability to work overtime.
Willingness and ability to travel.
Willingness and ability to work with Foodborne pathogens.
Reliability Status security clearance - Enhanced security clearance.
A valid Pre-Placement (Category 3) health evaluation in accordance with the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard (http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pol/doc-eng.aspx?id=12561); and,
Undertake a periodic health evaluation in accordance with Appendix A of the Occupational Health Evaluation Standard Schedule (http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pol/doceng.
