In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

(Common to ALL apprentice positions)

Education:

Successful completion of secondary school education according to Provincial Standards or the General Education Development (GED)
-Applicants will be expected to produce -Diploma, GED, and last year of schools transcripts. (Applicable to all trades.)

Knowledge:
Knowledge of basic trades math.

Abilities:
Ability to work with a computer.
Ability to problem-solve.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to read and comprehend written instructions in English.

Personal Suitabilities
-Thinking things through
-Showing initiative and being action oriented.
- Demonstrates integrity and respect
- Works effectively with others.

Operational Requirements:
-Requirement to work shifts and overtime
-Requirement to work on board ships and submarines alongside and at sea
-Occasional requirement to travel overseas.

Condition(s) of Employment
Security: Reliability
Requirement to wear all appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.

For all apprentice positions:
Must be able to lift heavy objects
(Up to 50 lbs/23 kgs)
Must be able to climb ladders and work from heights.
Must be able to work in confined spaces.
Must be able to register with the Industry Training Authority of British Columbia.
-Specific to Rigger:
Must be able to lift heavy objects (Up to 75 lbs/34 kgs)

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Experience or training including pre-apprenticeship training or entry level trades training in the applicable trade.
Experience or training in the marine industry.
Successful completion of pre-apprenticeship training.

Specific to Rigger/ Sailmaker Apprentice.
-Experience sewing or pattern lay out.
-Experience in rope or wire splicing.

Specific to Electroplater Apprentice:
- Successful completion of Chemistry 11
-Experience identifying various types of metals (Metallurgy)

Specific to Painter Apprentice:
-Experience in painting.

Specific to the Lagger Apprentice:
-Experience in heat and frost insulation processes
-Experience in pattern layout

Abilities:
Ability in handling of tools used in the applicable trade.(All Trades)

Organizational Needs:
In support of achieving a diversified workforce, consideration may be given to candidates self-identifying as belonging to one of the following Employment Equity groups: Aboriginal Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, Visible Minorities, and Women.

NOTES: Interested persons must meet each essential qualification to be appointed to the position. However, a person may be appointed to the position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications, operational requirements or organizational needs. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.
