Duties

The Technical Services Team, as part of Operations, is seeking a Manager to provide operational oversight for the delivery of engineering and pilot plant testing services to support applied research conducted at CanmetENERGY in Devon. The Technical Services Team is a multidisciplinary team of professional and technical staff responsible for operation of world-class hydroprocessing pilot-scale facilities with specialty toward hydrocarbon extraction, upgrading, and refining. The team works with both internal R&D team stakeholders and external industrial clients to ensure pilot plant projects are executed safely and to the clients’ needs. It is a dynamic environment with the team working on multiple projects at any given time. The Manager will ensure that Technical Services projects within span of control are aligned with defined strategic and operational plans for the group to meet organizational needs. The Manager will balance their activities and time between being a people and technical leader and has the experience to determine which focus is appropriate.

This role is accountable for execution of team projects with responsibility for implementation of project management, engineering, and safety principles, systems and tools to assure that project objectives are safely delivered on time, on budget, and to the client’s satisfaction. The Manager will support business development activities including client engagement and agreement negotiation and will ensure effective project planning including development of project proposals, budget estimates, and human resource and equipment allocations. The Manager will be responsible for staff performance management and staffing plan development and execution. The position will also be responsible for pilot plant maintenance engineering activities including leading assessment of potential new equipment acquisition and modifications to existing infrastructure in order to increase site capacity/capability for new research programs.

The intent of this process is to staff one ENG-05 position in Devon, Alberta, on a determinate basis, for a period of up to 3 years.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, petroleum engineering, or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Occupational Certification
Registered as a professional engineer in Canada.

Degree equivalency

Significant* experience managing hydrocarbon or petroleum-based processing pilot operations or commercial operations.
Experience providing engineering advice and expertise to internal and/or external stakeholders.
Experience in project management and managing financial resources.
Experience developing and maintaining strategic partnerships with internal and/or external stakeholders.
Experience negotiating issues or contractual agreements with stakeholders.
Experience in a leadership role and staff performance management.

*Significant experience is defined as the depth and breath of experience which would be normally be acquired with at least 5 years of experience
