Work environment

The Consumer Product Safety Directorate (CPSD) of the Healthy Environments and Consumer Safety Branch of Health Canada helps to protect the Canadian public by researching, assessing and collaborating in the management of health risks and safety hazards associated with consumer products that Canadians use every day. CPSD works in partnership with industry (manufacturers, retailers and distributors) to ensure safer consumer products in the marketplace, and equips consumers with safety information that helps them make better decisions regarding the products they use.

What we do?

CPSD conducts a wide range of activities to anticipate, mitigate and assist in reducing the health and safety risks associated with consumer products including consumer and workplace chemicals. Our work includes:

• surveillance;
• hazard and risk identification;
• risk assessment and management;
• investigations, inspections, seizures and prosecutions;
• support for developing safety standards and guidelines;
• testing and research on consumer products;
• providing importers, manufacturers and distributors with hazard and technical information;
• promoting safe and responsible use of products to consumers; and
• publishing product advisories, warnings and recalls.

Intent of the process

Although the immediate intent of this Job Opportunity Advertisement is to staff indeterminately, applicants should be aware that a pool of qualified candidates (fully assessed or partially assessed) may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level. In addition, this process may be used for various tenures, language profiles, security requirements and conditions of employment within Health Canada. As a result of the potential and possible use of the selection process and subsequent pool by hiring managers, we encourage all employees seeking this type of opportunity to apply.
