Duties

JOB PURPOSE

To develop and maintain effective corporate external communications on behalf of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) – G Division. To establish and maintain good relations with external media representatives and act as a point of contact for the Force in respect of proactive and reactive media. To respond swiftly and accurately to internal and external inquiries and requests. To develop a positive public profile for the Force and employees. To provide support, information and guidance to employees including Sr. Management of NT RCMP, to assist in the policies, decisions and interaction with media.

TASKS AND DUTIES – including but not limited to:

• Research, write, edit, update, publish, translate, and post media releases, advisory or public safety announcements, on all platforms, as required by operational duties and ongoing events and campaigns.
• Develop, maintain and manage internal and external communication and supply appropriate information between NT RCMP, the media and the community in support of strategic communications.
• Ensure prompt response to internal and external inquiries and timely release of information.
• Enable and facilitate information to the media from unit heads, line officers and senior management.
• Promote the positive image of NT RCMP, both internally and externally, to provide quality service and create a greater awareness of the activities and achievements of NT RCMP.
• Advise Sr. Management of issues raised by the media on matters pertaining to NT RCMP.
• Give immediate and accurate assessment on all situations arising from outside inquiries or ongoing operational matters, performing as police spokesperson where necessary.
• Plan and coordinate statements, in consultation with Director Communications, in relation to media on aspects of operational campaigns, incidents and initiatives.
• Prepare and organize media briefings, press conferences and radio and television interviews on issues and queries that may arise.
• Develop and maintain relationships with various media organizations, authorities and individuals.
• Develop and maintain good working relationships with media offices in other RCMP areas and partner agencies.
• Monitor the media closely, analyse local, national and international events that are either topical or relevant to the police service and provide accurate professional advice and information when required.
• Identify areas of good policing work, initiative and actions to be made available to the media.

Degree equivalency

Recent and significant experience in writing and editing a wide range of communications or marketing products such as media lines, media releases, internal messages, and external products.**

**Recent and significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience that would normally be acquired by a person in a position over a period of at least 2 years in the last 5 years.

Experience in developing communications plans.
Experience in coordinating projects or events.
Experience in providing strategic communication advice to managers or clients within an organization.

A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or other related field; or a 5 year combination of education, training and government or corporate communications experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience in federal government editing and writing standards.
Experience with internal communications in a Government of Canada context.
Experience using and writing for emerging technologies, such as social media as a communication tool.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Conditions of employment

Top Secret security clearance - NOTE: Successful candidates will require a valid RCMP security clearance prior to appointment and throughout the tenure of their employment. The process to obtain RCMP security clearance involves a security/reliability interview and a field investigation regarding matters of criminal activity which includes reference checks, verification of credit/financial status, education, employment, etc . As such, the process may take several weeks or months to complete.
