CanmetMINING is interested in furthering study on the following topic.
The utilization biomining and understanding of mechanisms is largely still in its infancy. However, understanding of these environments is improving rapidly due largely to recent advancements in molecular biology and potentially offer tremendous opportunities for advancement in bioleaching of mineral ore, environmental remediation and mitigation of acid mine drainage. This project aims to apply recent microbiological insights regarding biomining organisms for the advancement of mineral processing techniques. The oxidation kinetics of stirred-tank biomining operations are notoriously slow, resulting in long reactor residence times. Improving these reaction kinetics could result in significantly reduced residence times, which is a desirable outcome for mining operations. An M.Sc will be undertaken on this topic.
