Phytobacteriology fulfills horticultural sector needs affecting the productivity of the agricultural sector and the quality of farming products. The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Research and Development Centre is at the forefront of research, innovation and the adoption of beneficial practices. The position to be filled in bacterial ecology and will be at the core of the development of this new source of scientific knowledge and solutions generating favourable impacts in the sector.
The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu Research and Development Centre helps the Canadian horticultural sector to remain competitive and sustainable by developing original knowledge, tools and know-how, primarily in the fields of horticultural crop protection with an approach bio vigilance and precision horticulture. The center is very supportive of the departmental priority to "Develop new knowledge, foster innovation and increase the adoption and commercialization of Agri-food and Agro-industrial products, practices or processes."
The Center is a participating site of the Minor Use Pesticides Program, which aims to minimize the impact of the agricultural industry on the environment, while improving the pre- and post-harvest quality of crops. It is one of the most important experimental sites for the Pest Control Centre's registration requests for the Minor Use Pesticide Program, with a team of biologists and their technicians. This research corresponds with industry needs in Quebec and Canada.
Although the intent is to fill 1 permanent full time position, an inventory of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for to fill similar positions (permanent or temporary) for the location referenced in this process or any other AAFC research center.

Education requirements : Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of phytopathology or another acceptable discipline related to the duties of the position.
Applications will be accepted from candidates enrolled in, but have not yet completed a Ph.D. program. Completion of the Ph.D. thesis must occur before the date of appointment in the fall of 2018.
Experience in the design and conduct of scientific research in phytopathology, microbial ecology, or in a related discipline.
Demonstrated scientific productivity/recognition in the form of authorship/editorship of research results in the area of plant diseases caused by bacteria, phytopathology, microbial ecology or other relevant discipline, in recognized journals and/or published reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from scientific research.
Research experience on bacteria that cause diseases on crop plants.
Research experience in epidemiology of plants diseases.
Research experience on cultural, agronomic, environmental and genetic factors that influence the development of bacterial diseases and of plant protection methods.
Experience writing research grant applications.
Experience working on a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience managing multi-year projects with associated human resource, budgetary, and planning functions.
Experience interacting with industry and other stakeholders to garner support and research direction.
Experience /Post-doctoral fellowship in a relevant field related to this poster.

Information on language requirements
Knowledge of plant diseases caused by bacteria and of their effects on major horticultural crops in Eastern Canada.
Knowledge of principles and methods used in phytopathology, in ecology, in molecular biology, and in functional genomics and of how to apply them to research in phytopathology.
Knowledge of cultural, agronomic, environmental and genetic factors that influence the development of bacterial diseases and of plant protection methods.
