Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff an indeterminate position in Toronto, Ontario.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established from this process which may be used to staff similar positions within Environment and Climate Change Toronto, Ontario with various tenures (e.g. indeterminate, specified period, acting, deployment, assignment), with various language requirements and profiles and conditions of employment.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in chemistry.

Degree equivalency

Experience in air sampling or chemical analysis of air pollutant samples.

Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical instrumentation such as ion chromatographs, gas chromatographs, liquid chromatographs or mass spectrometers for trace chemical analysis of environmental samples.

Experience in application of statistics and quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) to data sets.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Graduation with a post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental chemistry or equivalent.

Degree equivalency

Experience using computer software for data processing.

Experience in air sampling, sample preparation and analysis of persistent organic pollutants.

Experience in conducting deposition and/or flux studies of air toxics.

Experience in the operation of liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS).

Experience participating in field studies related to atmospheric chemistry.

Experience analyzing data from active air samplers (e.g. high volume air sampler).

Experience analyzing data from passive air samplers (e.g. PUF disk or XAD sampler).

Experience in the operation, calibration and maintenance of gas-phase measuring instruments for air pollutants.

Experience in the chemical analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by gas chromatography.

Experience in the measurement of trace inorganic gases (e.g. NOx, O3, SO2).

Experience working in a trace inorganic/environmental analytical laboratory conducting analyses of air, particulate matter and precipitation samples of relevance to acidic deposition.

Experience in analyzing environmental samples using ICP-OES and/or determination of OC/EC by thermal/optical transmittance.

Knowledge of the techniques for the collection of atmospheric samples for the measurement/determination of trace pollutants.

Ability to analyze, evaluate and recommend appropriate courses of action.

Ability to carry out scientific data analysis and quality control.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
