*Please note: While the candidate appointed to the position will be required to join the vessel at various ports on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, the position is based in Sarnia, Ontario.
• Administers and manages the vessel's financial, human and materiel resources to ensure that the vessel is operated within the allocated budget and in accordance with applicable plans, standards, programs, regulations and directives of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
• Plans, organizes, directs, controls and co-ordinates all the operations of the vessel and equipment in the performance of assigned tasks, and provides functional and operational advice on missions and mission objectives to Senior Management.
• Ensures the safety and security of the vessel in port and at sea, supervises the vessel's officers, crew and assigned staff, promotes their well-being and productivity as well as identifies the need for and conducts training.
• Promotes and maintains harmonious and mutually beneficial relationships among the employer, crew, client and contractor, and manages the grievance procedure.
• Directs helicopter and small craft operations as well as programs in Search and Rescue, Icebreaking, Environmental Response, Boating Safety, Conservation and Protection, Science and Marine Aids to Navigation programs.
• Enforces compliance and investigates acts of non-compliance with various acts and regulations, collects and gives evidence, and prepares court briefs.
• Provides a thorough Change of Command with the relieving Commanding Officer, including a review of pertinent vessel documents and relevant correspondence.
• Arranges and provides public guided tours of the ship.
• Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.
A large Canadian Coast Guard presence is on the Great Lakes. Operations require individuals to work on either a day boat or live on board vessels up to twenty-eight (28) days at a time. While onboard the various Coast Guard vessels operating on the Great Lakes, Canadian Coast Guard personnel deliver programs and services such as search and rescue, marine aids to navigation, marine environmental protection, as well as supporting Government-wide initiatives such as maritime security, science and hydrographic studies.
The intent of this process is to create a pool of candidates that will be used to staff upcoming vacant positions on an indeterminate, term or acting basis. This pool may be used to staff similar positions with various tenures, various security clearance levels and/or various language requirements.

-Valid certificate of competency as Master near Coastal, Master Mariner or CCG Command.
-Minimum of 2 years * recent** expériences as Commanding officer or Chief Officer on CCG Class C vessel or higher
Or
Minimum of 2 years* recent** experience as Captain of a commercial vessel 500GT or higher.
*Two years experiences is defined as a minimum of 280 operational days as Commanding Officer, Captain or Chief Officer (Second in command)
** recent means within the past 10 years
-4 months experience in a shore position relating to fleet management* or fleet training
Or
For current or previous public servants:
3 months experience in a shore position relating to Fleet management or Fleet training; and
Successful completion of G110 - Essentials of Managing in the Public Service
*Fleet Management - Fleet management experience shall encompass such requirements as exposure to planning, decision making, determining operational requirements, budgetary input to reach Fleet objective in client satisfaction, mission readiness, safety, cost effectiveness and accountability. Equivalent project work such as vessel modernization or construction / acquisition project may be accepted.
-90 days experience in Icebreaking operations as a commanding Officer
-90 days experience in aids to navigation operations as a Commanding Officer or a Chief Officer
-Experience in planning, coordinating or delivering complex client services
-Experience in carrying out the requirements of the Ship’s Safety and Security Management System (ISM)
-Minimum of 84 days recent** experience as Commanding Officer during ice operations
OR
168 days of recent** experience as Chief Officer during ice operations
OR
168 days of recent**combined experience as Commanding Officer/Chief Officer during icebreaking operations (This must be clearly addressed in the candidate’s cover letter)

Willingness and ability to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) standards, inclusive of CSA approved Safety Footwear (black in colour), and maintain job related personal safety equipment.
Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program - RPP.
