Intent of the process

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates resulting from this selection process will be created and may be used to fill the same or similar positions with various linguistic profiles and language requirements (such as English or French essential, bilingual imperative level - BBB/BBB), as well as tenures (term, indeterminate) within the Canadian Conservation Institute.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION

- Graduation with a Master's degree in conservation from a *recognized post-secondary institution or a successful completion of a two (2) year post-secondary educational program in conservation and **equivalent experience.

*A "recognized" post-secondary institution is one that has provincial or territorial degree/diploma-granting status, or a university/college outside Canada of which the programs/degrees are accepted by a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

**Equivalent experience - In addition to the successful completion of a two (2) year post-secondary educational program in conservation candidates must have the equivalent to two (2) years of valid experience in conservation for each year of Master's degree in conservation that the candidate does not have.

- The applicant must have specialized** training in the conservation of paper based archival materials and of photographs.

** Specialized at this level is defined as having completed courses, internships and workshops on the conservation of paper based archival materials and of photographs.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

- Recent*** and extensive**** experience in treatment of archival collections, including development of techniques and methodologies for the conservation of paper based archival materials and of photographs.

*** Recent is defined as in the last four (4) years.

****Extensive at this level is defined as having four (4) years or more experience in the conservation of archival collections.

- Experience in planning own conservation treatment projects of paper based archival materials and of photographs (Project Management).

Information on language requirements

KNOWLEDGE

- Knowledge of the science and technology of paper based archival materials and of photographs.

- Knowledge of the techniques and practices of assessing the condition and conservation needs of paper based archival materials and of photographs. Includes knowledge of how to carry out and interpret diagnostic tests to assess the condition of objects and the effectiveness or suitability of treatments.

- Knowledge of conservation principles, methodologies and approaches to the conservation treatment and preservation of paper based archival materials and of photographs.

- Technical and ethical knowledge of conservation issues relating to the conservation of paper based archival materials and of photographs.

- Knowledge of preventive conservation pertaining to paper based archival materials and of photographs.

ABILITIES:

- Ability to plan and execute complex conservation treatments of paper based archival materials and of photographs.

- Ability to engage in critical and conceptual thinking.

- Ability to innovate.

- Ability to communicate concepts, ideas and research results effectively in writing.

- Ability to communicate effectively orally concepts, ideas and research results.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE

- Experience in writing and publishing specialized professional papers, articles or reports and giving conference presentations.

- Experience in developing new treatments, or modifying treatments, for the conservation of photographs.

- Experience in carrying out conservation related research.

KNOWLEDGE

- Knowledge of the mandate, mission and services of the Canadian Conservation Institute.

- Knowledge of the Canadian heritage community.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

- Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
- Willingness and ability to work overtime on short notice.
- Willingness and ability to work scheduled overtime.
- Willingness and ability to travel.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

- Must be able to lift up to 10 kilograms.
- Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.

All information obtained throughout the selection process, from the time of application to close of process, could be used to evaluate the candidates.
