Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill positions in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador. A pool of fully-qualified candidates and a partially qualified pool of candidates will be created to fill positions on a term, indeterminate, or acting basis.

Education (EED1):

Successful completion of a program from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural, physical or applied science or engineering relevant to the duties of the position, OR an acceptable combination* of education and experience.

EG-03: *An acceptable combination is defined as a secondary school diploma and 1 year of relevant work experience

EG-04: *An acceptable combination is defined as a secondary school diploma and 5 years of relevant work experience

EG-05: *An acceptable combination is defined as a secondary school diploma and 7 years of relevant work experience

Experience providing technical support for scientific field or laboratory projects relating to aquatic organisms or environments in one of the following areas: population science, stock assessment, habitat science, fisheries productivity science, ecology, ecosystem science, biodiversity science, aquatic invasive species, species at risk, aquaculture science, animal health, genomics or biotechnology, benthic ecology or oceanography.

EG-04 and EG-05 Only:

Experience working at sea or on large bodies of water on medium or large vessels for extended periods* of time and in a variety of sea states.

Experience in troubleshooting scientific equipment or software for the acquisition of data for aquatic studies

Experience operating, maintaining, calibrating, or repairing aquatic electronic sensors, instrumentation or equipment (for example laboratory analyzers, CTDs, oxygen sensors, current meters, underwater cameras, sonar systems, hydrophones)

AQ 17:
Experience with programming languages such as Matlab, Python, R, SAS, SQL, C++, Fortran, or other scientific programming software

AQ 18:
Experience in working in isolated field conditions for extended periods* of time.

Experience installing and operating fish enumeration systems

AQ 20:
Experience in determining the reproductive status of aquatic organisms, including invertebrates or finfish

Experience in determining the reproductive status of marine mammals

Experience working with, handling, or caring for live aquatic organisms in the laboratory or in the field

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Willing and able to engage in frequent travel (for certain positions).

Willing and able to go to sea (for certain positions).

Willing and able to work nights and weekends and variable hours as required by operational needs (for certain positions).
