What to Expect

Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) is looking to staff one(1) Practice Consultant position in the Regional Nursing Office. The position is in the area of Public Health and includes a clinical focus on maternal child health, school health and immunization across the lifespan.

In Alberta there are 45 rural, remote and isolated First Nation communities. You will be expected to travel to these communities to connect with the health teams and provide the clinical and practice support.

What Will You Be Doing

As a practice consultant you will provide clinical support in the specific area of Public Health to nurses working in Alberta First Nation communities. You will be responsible to ensure that best and promising practices are in place with development of protocols for the implementation of these practices in the communities. Working within the Regional Nursing Office you will collaborate with various areas within nursing as well as with other programs. You will be responsible for the continuous practice improvements for the nurses in these areas of practice and use a variety of tools to deliver ongoing learning sessions and clinical sessions.

Practice Consultant: Public Health Nursing Stream

The practice consultant provides community health practice expertise and direction to nursing staff on all community health nursing programs. These programs include: health for all ages, immunization for all ages, chronic disease prevention and promotion. There is a strong emphasis on community development with informed evidence based research that contributes to best practice program delivery and supports competent practitioners.

Education:
A Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

(If Master’s degree has not been completed at time of application, all requirements for Master’s degree must be finalized prior to completion of assessment process and confirmation from the educational institution that Master’s degree will be conferred will be required in order to demonstrate that the Master’s degree has been completed)

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Information on language requirements

Experience:
Recent and significant* experience working as a Registered Nurse in Public Health/Community Health. Experience is to include maternal/child health, immunizations of all ages and chronic disease management.

*Recent and significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with full time performance of duties for a minimum period of 3 consecutive years within the last 5 years.

Organizational Needs:

Operational Requirements:
• CPR Certificate, Healthcare Provider Level C, renewed annually.
• Travel to remote locations on gravel roads or small aircraft.
• Willingness and ability to work overtime on occasion
• Willingness and ability to work overtime in the event of a public health emergency or outbreak

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Possession of a valid drivers license

Continuous professional registration with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA)
