Duties

This position will be leading subordinate staff, conducting maintenance activities, and maintaining/improving the lawns and grounds encompassing the Central Experimental Farm (C.E.F.). Maintaining and improving the roads, fences, pathways, parking areas as required. The incumbent will be operating vehicles such as trucks, tractors, pay-loaders, fork lifts, riding lawn mowers, UTV (utility vehicles) etc., as well as operating hand and power tools associated with horticulture and grounds maintenance. The duties will also include the application of biological/chemical pesticides and fertilizers. In addition, the duties will include site snow removal services.

Work environment

Agriculture Agri-Food Canada maintains the 427 Hectares of property that make up the National Historic site of the Central Experimental Farm, the farm in the middle of the city. This property is home to the Dominion Arboretum, Ornamental Gardens, Ottawa Research and Development Centre as well as the Canadian Agriculture and Food Museum. The site is visited by millions of tourists each year and is used as a learning location for many local students. As an active research centre it also draws the interest of scientists and students from all over the world for learning and collaborations.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: To staff a full-time permanent Leadhand, Grounds Maintenance position (Bilingual Imperative (BBB/BBB).

Anticipatory: A pool of partiallly qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a permanent full-time or part-time basis or on a temporary full-time or part-time basis for the locations indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

Successful completion of secondary school OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience

Degree equivalency

Experience in turf and lawn care and repair and maintenance of roadways, pathways
Experience in leading and organizing a group of workers
Experience in using computer software such as word processing, database and email programs
Experience in commercial snow removal operations on a large site
Experience in the operation and maintenance of horticultural/farm related equipment

Possession of a valid class D driver’s license with Z-air endorsement
Certification in the operation of a chainsaw
Certification in the operation of heavy commercial equipment for the purposes of grounds maintenance

Ability and willingness to work in variable weather conditions such as extreme heat, cold, rain, winds, snow, etc...
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides
Ability and willingness to lift up to 25 kg (50lbs)
Ability and willingness to achieve and maintain the required pesticide certification upon employment
Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required for by the position
Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or appropriate medication(s) and must not infringe upon the duties to be performed.
